Terms of Reference
BACKGROUND
The Department of Security Risk Management (DSRM) supports the UNRWA mandate by providing guidance, support, training, and facilitating risk-informed decision making through ad hoc analysis for programmes in all environments. DSRM strives to ensure that crosscutting issues including gender and protection are integrated into all the Department’s initiatives and efforts by focusing on four main pillars:
- Capacity Building
- Operational Support
- ARC services (Analysis, Reporting, and Communication)
- Security Governance
DSRM engages with the Inter Agency Security Management Network to review policies, practices, budget, and resource related issues pertaining to the United Nations Security Management System that work to improve the efficiency of security risk management.
This post reports directly to the DSRM Security Risk Management Communication & Marketing Consultant and provides assistance in development and implementation of the Department’s marketing and communication strategy.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
· Translate marketing/product ideas into effective design (digital and print)
· Produce web content (email templates, social media graphics, banner ads, basic video creation and editing, promotional materials, presentations, report layouts, data visualizations/infographics, etc.)
· Collaborate with colleagues across the office to deliver design elements on brand and to specification
· Execute design concepts that deliver on goals and are technically feasible to implement.
· Manage and prioritize multiple last minute creative direction and multiple rounds of edits
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Education: Bachelor’s degree (or higher) from an accredited educational institution in Graphic Design or related field.
Work Experience: Applicants are not required to have professional work experience, although prior experience in graphic designing will be an advantage.
Languages: Excellent command of spoken and written Arabic and English
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
• A bachelor’s degree in design or related field.
• Expert proficiency in the latest versions of Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) & Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Word, Excel). HTML, CSS, and Javascript are a plus.
• Excellent time management and organizational skills
• Accuracy and Attention to detail
• A portfolio that demonstrates fluency in all areas of visual design (have exceptional skills in typography, layout, color theory, information design).
• The ability to manage competing projects and shifting priorities to meet deadlines, all with a professional demeanor and positive attitude.
• Proactivity in anticipating problems, proposing solutions, and initiating collaborative resolution.

From time-to-time an intern may need to work hours that aren’t typical, so a flexible approach is needed to get the best from the job. Most of our work is digital, but we do have the occasional need to create print materials. Familiarity with both environments is useful. Additionally, an interest in global politics is helpful.

At the stage of acceptance of an internship placement, interns must prove to the satisfaction of UNRWA that they have adequate medical and accident insurance coverage prior to commencing the placement.
Intern placements shall not constitute employment by UNRWA. Interns are considered to be complementary personnel with non-staff status. The purpose of the internship program is not to lead to further employment with UNRWA but to complement an intern’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship. Interns are eligible to apply as external candidates for UNRWA staff vacancies in accordance with normal selection procedures.
