BUILDING FORWARD FAIRER (BFF) CAMPAIGN at Oxfam

Oxfam is a global movement of people working together to end the injustice of poverty.

That means we tackle the inequality that keeps people poor. Together we save, protect and rebuild lives. When disaster strikes, we help people build better lives for themselves, and for others. We take on issues like land rights, climate change and discrimination against women. And we won’t stop until every person on the planet can enjoy life free from poverty.

We are an international confederation of 19 organizations (affiliates) working together with partners and local communities in the areas of humanitarian, development and campaigning, in more than 90 countries.

*Background

The COVID-19 pandemic has tested the social, economic and political and environmental resilience of the Horn East and Central Africa (HECA) region, exacting a massive toll on the poor and most vulnerable especially women, jeopardizing decades of hard-won development gains. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the pandemic has widened the continent’s financing gap to $345 billion and derailed progress towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Countries in Horn East and Central Africa (HECA) region entered the pandemic with elevated debt vulnerabilities and less room to spend. Despite the economic shocks of COVID-19, the continent is buoyed by growing economic opportunities and investment interests. They are poised to build forward fairer if governments are committed to an equal, accountable, transparent and gender responsive COVID-19 response and post-COVID-19 recovery. While recognizing that we are in the midst of the pandemic, it is a critical moment to rally actors and governments to build momentum on reducing inequality and discrimination of women as countries gear for post COVID-19 recovery. Accordingly, Oxfam in HECA is working with others on rolling out a timely regional ‘Building Forward Fairer’ campaign. The campaigns calls on the national, regional governments and institutions to put in place measures for a fairer and just recovery for a better future.

The specific objectives of the campaign are:

  1. To foster a greater commitment to a fairer and just COVID-19 response and recovery
  2. To foster greater public oversight for accountable, transparent and gender-responsive post-COVID-19 economic recovery

3. To shift public narratives on women unpaid care work and gender-based violence including their prioritization in the post COVID-19 recovery agenda**

*The Assignment

The campaign will focus on the following strands of work:

  1. Addressing inequality as a cross-cutting issue (Investing in essential public services and access to people vaccines)
  2. Fiscal justice (transparency and accountability, responsible lending, debt management)
  3. Protecting civic space
  4. Feminist recovery
