Director – Health, Nutrition and HIV/AIDS At Save the Children

The Opportunity

This is a sectoral head position, overall purpose of this role is to have strategic oversight and leading of Save the Children health, nutrition and HIV/AIDS sector and oversee all programs under this sector, along with oversee the Sponsorship Program. The Director will ensure that they are addressing the most critical issues for children and their families, to ensure the quality of existing programs, to build SC portfolio in these areas, to ensure that advocacy measures relevant to health, nutrition and HIV/AIDS are delivered in a timely and appropriate manner to the right audiences. She/he is also responsible for donor and GoB liaison on common strategic issues.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Oversee the design and approval of a high quality country health, nutrition and HIV/AIDS strategy in-line with the objectives of the SCI global strategy
  • Develop funding strategies and grant proposals to ensure adequate resources are secured for programme activities from both grants and the private funds of SC members. This will include continuously identifying strategic leads and concepts, which can be designed into programs/projects that contribute to the overall strategy of the country programme.
  • Lead in the development of a planning cycle for the sector programme, including annual, quarterly and monthly planning as well as the follow-up of monthly work plans. Review project reports and ensure timely reports to donors and headquarters
  • Develop and implement strategies to promote gender balance and inclusive health and nutrition practice in health service provision in all project areas
  • Coordinate with other agencies to find avenues for strong collaboration on common health, nutrition & HIV/AIDS program issues.
  • Establish and maintain good relationships with government ministries and departments, UN agencies, and NGOs involved in the sector, and actively participate in coordination meetings.

Qualifications and experience

  • Medical Graduate (MBBS) with Masters in Public Health (MPH), preferably with advanced degree in health education
  • Minimum 10 years experience in health programming with diverse technical areas, including 5 years’ experience in a senior management position.
  • Significant demonstrated experience in providing high quality technical advice in health, nutrition & HIV/AIDS programs for children both in development and humanitarian context
  • Understanding the Core Humanitarian Standard and emergency health and nutrition programming
  • Experience in resource mobilization, business development and national level advocacy
  • A commitment to children’s rights and an ability to provide leadership in this area.
  • Experience in managing health related significant grants, especially with USAID, GFATM, EU with excellent donor relationship
  • Experience with strategic planning process and with partner organisations
  • Demonstrable competence in training, monitoring and evaluation, policy review and formulation, proposal and report writing.
  • Fluency in written and spoken in English
  • Advanced knowledge on health sector policy and programs, the situation of the country
  • Clear understanding of Government’s policy as well as Donor’s perspective
  • Demonstrated expertise at leading and managing large-scale and diverse teams and programs
  • Excellent leadership and advocacy skills
  • Resource Management, Training and capacity building, Coaching/Mentoring skills
