Project Manager At Samos Volunteers

Project Description:
The Human Rights Lawyer Project (HRLP) on Samos was founded as a joint initiative of individual humanitarian workers in 2020. The project has established a legal referral pathway for asylum-seekers and refugees who wish to make a complaint, or seek legal assistance when they have been victim of a human rights violation. Such cases include, but are not limited to, denial of access to essential health care services, negligence on behalf of health care professionals, unlawful incarceration, incarceration with inadequate or deficient facilities, denial of access to the asylum procedure, violence on behalf of public authorities.
The operations of HRLP on the ground are overseen by the Project Manager, whose primary aim is the management and supervision of a legal team working on litigation and representation in cases of alleged human rights violations on behalf of asylum-seekers and refugees on Samos
Role and Responsibilities:
The candidate will work on the ground in Vathy town, Samos, and respond to the legal needs and cases as they arise. Primary tasks will include:
● Responsibility for the running of operations on the ground, encouraging the ongoing development of the project and ensuring that its strategic direction is on target;
● Supervision and management of the legal team, i.e. lawyer(s) and legal assistant(s), including the monitoring of attendance and performance;
● Monitoring human rights violations against asylum-seekers and refugees residing in Vathy RIC and other locations on Samos island;
● Leading the recruitment process, including selection and interviewing of candidates, with support of the advisory group and legal team if required;
● Administration management of payroll system, contract renewals and termination, and holiday leave;
● In close cooperation with the board of the organization, responsibility for administrative tasks surrounding project sustainability, such as budget management, risk assessment and logistics;
● Ensuring a safe and thriving work environment, and facilitating positive employee relations;
● Managing the project’s workload, establishing the project and case priorities, and assigning the associated tasks to staff members;
● Ensuring that all legal cases taken on by the team fit within the mandate of the project, and in cases of exception, submit proposal to the advisory group;
● Designing and implementing data records and case management system, and supervising its ongoing maintenance;
● Promoting the overall provision of project services, to ensure proactive recruitment of new legal cases;
● In close cooperation with the board of the organization, drafting policies, procedures and protocols to govern the operations of the project;
● Preparing regular project progress reporting to donors and advisory group (one monthly report) to track strategic goal accomplishment;
● Working closely with other stakeholders on the island as the face of the project, to ensure close and effective cooperation and information exchange.

Essential Requirements:
● Legal Background;
● Experience in project management and strategic planning;
● Dedication to the pursuit of justice and due process in the field of migration;
● Self-motivated and able to work independently, while also leading a team;
● Ability and willingness to work in a dynamic and highly challenging environment, which may necessitate out-of-work hours;
● Awareness of ethical guidelines for the humanitarian field, including GDPR;
● Fluent English language skills;

Preferred Skills:
● Experience working in a legal capacity in the area of migration;
● Experience of managing a team;
● Proficiency in one other language (e.g. French, Farsi, Arabic)
