Financial Controller. At Tushinde Children’s Trust

Tushinde is a family strengthening project. It works with over 500 highly vulnerable children in the informal settlements of Nairobi, Kenya. Tushinde’s early intervention work aims to aims to reach children before family breakdown, when they are at high risk of ending up in overcrowded institutions, on the streets, or worse. We have a team of 22 staff in Kenya: 13 qualified social workers, a counsellor and support staff. We work with 180 families across two informal settlements and have a clear model that helps families move from crisis to graduation off the programme whilst ensuring children are safe and protected.

This is a part-time role (8 hours a week) to provide remote support for the local team with key financial tasks.

  • Reports to the Executive director with additional support from the treasurer.
  • Liaises with the finance team in Kenya, the bookkeeper in the UK and other finance volunteer
  • Responsibilities include oversight of day-to-day finance activities eg weekly authorisation of bank transactions, monthly review of transactions within Quick Books accounting system (to identify correct fund allocations, any potential fraud or unusual accounting treatment), monthly reconciliation of expenditure against restricted income, quarterly review of financial reports and forecasts prepared by local team for management.
  • We would also need the volunteer to liaise with the Kenyan team to track the expenditure of grants.

Key skills and experience required:

Essential:

  • Knowledge of Quickbooks and accounting principles.
  • Ability to work in different currencies and produce financial reports in different currencies.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to teach and mentor others.
  • Experience in setting up and implementing workable systems for financial assurance.

Desirable:

  • Experience reporting to institutional donors such as the FCDO or large grant making foundations.
