Senior Communications Officer At ICAP

Position Summary

The Pandemic Response Institute (PRI) represents a landmark endeavor operated by ICAP at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health in partnership with CUNY School of Public Health and other academic, community, government and corporate partners and supported with resources from the New York City Economic Development Corporation (EDC) and other donors and supporters. The vision for PRI is to build sustained, cooperative action to prepare, predict, detect, respond, and recover from major health threats and to reduce the glaring disparities as noted in association with the COVID-19 pandemic in the City of New York. The PRI will address the entire lifecycle of emergency preparedness and response by advancing a dynamic set of activities that increase resilience to the adverse consequences of public health emergencies.

The Senior Communications Officer (SCO) is a member of a multi-disciplinary core management team that plans, manages, and coordinates implementation of PRI work plans, activities, and initiatives. The SCO leads and manages the communications for and public presence of the PRI including development of high-impact, innovative communications strategies, messaging, print and web-based materials, and web content.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain an overall communications framework and communications strategies for PRI inclusive of media strategies, key documentation, and web presence. (25%)
  • Conceptualize, draft, and distribute project materials, briefs, success stories, editorials, and news stories. (25%)
  • Promote the visibility of the Institute, directly support fundraising and development initiatives, and contribute to key partnerships and collaborations. (20%)
  • Contribute to the generation of proposals, fundraising appeals and reports to boards, donors, and supporters (15%)
  • Coordinate PRI-related media activity in close consultation with communications office and contacts throughout Columbia University, CUNY, EDC, and partners. (10%)
  • Performs other duties, as assigned, in support of the work of the Institute. (5%)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in strategic communications, marketing, public policy, or a public health-related field. Equivalent in education and experience, plus four years of related experience.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience in strategic communications, preferably within public health agencies, non-governmental organizations, or local governments
  • Demonstrated experience in the management of comprehensive communications requirements related to high profile, complex projects involving concurrently running activities and multiple partnerships
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize complex technical and scientific language and principles into communications materials intended for a variety of audiences and platforms
  • Excellent writing and editorial skills and working knowledge of video and graphic production
  • Experience in designing and maintaining project-related websites and conducting web analytics

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preferred of seven (7) years of experience in strategic communications, preferably within public health agencies, non-governmental organizations, or local governments
  • Intermediate to advanced fluency (oral and written) in Spanish
  • Experience working on projects related to public health emergencies, public health preparedness and/or epidemic/pandemic response

Other Requirements

  • Limited domestic travel of 1-2 trips per year may be expected.
