Purpose of Job:
The Director of Fundraising and Communications will be responsible for developing and implementing the Fundraising Strategy for World Action Fund in overseas (including the associated Communications Strategy). Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Fundraising and Communications will be responsible for achieving the organisation’s fundraising goals and communicating with supporters, stakeholders and partners in Uganda and overseas. This includes the continuing development of existing and fledgling key relationships and contacts within World Action Fund operation locations and international networks, with a particular emphasis on corporate fundraising and the management of the Fundraising & Communications team at the organisation’s office in Uganda and global network of fundraising volunteers.
KEY FUNDRAISING AREAS
Fundraising
- Develop the World Action Fund’s fundraising strategy. Working with the Senior Management Team to set, implement and monitor income and expenditure and budget for the financial year.
- Manage a major donor programme and work to recruit to support the work of the charity.
- Manage a corporate fundraising strategy and work to continue the development of key corporate relationships and corporate support for the work of WAF
- Engage the support of the WAF Fundraising and Investment Committee of trustees to involve the committee members in supporting fundraising and in the initiation and development of key fundraising relationships.
- Lead fundraising and income generation for key projects including specific fundraising appeals and the development of effective and appropriate fundraising products.
- Implement and oversee Legacy Marketing and lead on the generation and management of legacy pledgers.
- Work with the WAF to develop effective and appropriate funding strategies and content and to ensure full Uganda cost recovery is built into all funding proposals and products.
- Assist the Director of Programmes to work with fundraising volunteers to developing income generation plans and setting goals for in country fundraising.
- Manage and develop WAF membership and regular donor strategy, including opportunities to mobilise members for income generation.
- Support and line manage the Partnerships and Funding Manager to Research, develop and manage relationships with potential funders, write proposals and funding applications to trusts, foundations, institutional donors and businesses, and ensure that funders’ requirements are met (including the management of reporting to donors).
- Support and line manage the Communications, Marketing & Fundraising Officer in the development of fundraising challenge events to ensure that these are delivering against targets and in supporting volunteers to fundraise for WAF.
Communications
- Develop and monitor the WAF communications strategy including the development of effective and appropriate key messages about the work of WAF and to generate support.
- Plan, agree and implement the marketing and communications plan across all areas ofWAF activity, adhering to budgets and deadlines.
- Monitor and evaluate outcomes of the communications plan and its return on investment, developing this in response to changing circumstances.
- Be responsible for developing and leading with the Executive Director, the organisations’ public relations,communications and media work, working with the Communications, Marketing & Fundraising Officer to deliver this.
- Act as an advocate and spokesperson for WAF at presentations, events and meetings. Make presentations about the organisation and its activities at conferences, seminars etc.
- With the Executive Director, act as a spokesperson with the media. Develop and manage a media emergency response strategy including the production of pre-prepared media statements and briefings to all staff, trustees and volunteers as appropriate.
- Support and line manage the Communications, Marketing & Fundraising Officer in raising the profile of WAF a range of media outlets including managing social media channels, website management, management of Google analytics and AdWords, email marketing and others.
- Manage the Fundraising & Communications Team and work closely with members of the Senior Management Team***
- Act as the senior manager for the Fundraising and Communications team and sit on the WAF senior management team and the Fundraising and Investment Sub- Committee of the Board of Directors.
- Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with WAF policies and applicable laws.
- Provide support to the Executive Director, deputising when necessary.
- Contribute to meetings with the Board of Director as requested and prepare Board reports for monitoring

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Person Specification and qualification

Minimum of Bachelor degree in any related field, and Masters an extra added advantage
Knowledge and experience
- Strategic fundraising experience at a senior level (ideally gained in an International Development
- Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO)) with the ability to think ahead, set clear direction and formulate realistic strategic objectives
- Experience of data analysis, IT and research to support fundraising growth
- A strong understanding of strategic communications, marketing and how to raise an organisation’s profile and impact
- Extensive experience of business development and demonstrable success in growing income through a diverse range of fundraising activities (ideally including experience of Corporate and/or
- Major Donor Fund-raising), personally securing gifts.
- Experience of managing and developing a team to achieve excellence and meeting targets
- Experience of influencing a wide range of internal and external stakeholders
- Experience developing innovative and targeted fundraising campaigns and high-level events
