WASH Lab Assistant – Idleb- Syria At GOAL

General Description of the Programme:

GOAL has been working in Syria since 2013, responding to the acute needs of conflict-affected communities. GOAL is working in Idleb Governate, both through direct implementation and through partners, delivering food, non-food programming to highly vulnerable populations, and provision of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) through support to Water units, as well as emergency support to recently displaced households.

Job purpose:

The WASH Lab assistant will be based in GOAL’s offices in Harem or Darkosh, Syria, reporting to the WASH Lab officer, and will be part of WASH team who are responsible to observe water quality in water stations and water networks within the operation areas of WASH program.

The WASH Lab assistant is responsible for ensuring that GOAL supplies drinking water to beneficiaries within the acceptable international standards.

The WASH Lab assistant will be responsible for carrying out all laboratory experiments to test the water quality, the WASH Lab assistant will also be responsible for testing the quality of fuel that GOAL is supplying to the generators of water stations.

The WASH Lab assistant will be the key role for setting technical specification for all activities related to disinfection of drinking water and will prepare the required technical documents. Also, he/she will be responsible for supporting the Labs assistants of water units to following up and monitoring the water system to ensure the best quality for drinking water be provided to the served communities.

Duties, objectives, and competencies

  • Properly collect water samples from households, water stations and any other water point as necessary;
  • Carry out laboratory assessments to test water quality attributes including but not limited to faecal coliforms, free and total chlorine, pH, and turbidity;
  • Carry out laboratory assessments to test fuel quality attributes including but not limited to Flash Point, Cetane number, and density;
  • Documentation of all water quality and fuel tests in correct data collection software;
  • Coordination with water units’ staff and GOAL WASH team to ensure the ability to regularly collect water samples;
  • Support the water units’ labs assistants and provide the required knowledge and training to water units staff to ensure their ability to carry out water tests independently;
  • support of water units’ labs assistants to adjust chlorine dosing pumps of water stations to ensure that the Free Residual Chlorine (FRC) in water networks, water trucks within the acceptable values;
  • Provide feedback for the design of water quality testing as necessary.
  • Prepare fuel and water quality test reports;
  • Provide the line manager with daily and weekly water quality tests results, alerting the water units of extreme poor water quality tests immediately;
  • Work alongside with MEL team as required;
  • Ensure that policies and guidelines as laid down in GOAL manuals and policies are always adhered;
  • Ensure adherence to GOAL’s Code of Conduct and Child Protection Policy and standards of Integrity, as well as uphold GOAL’s whistleblowing mechanisms;
  • Ensure compliance against all donor requirements, including timely quality reporting, as applicable to the project;
  • Other related tasks at the request of the line Manager.

Requirements (essential)

  • Degree level qualification in chemistry, or other related discipline (a university graduate);
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in WASH Laboratories or similar;
  • Excellent experience and knowledge of disinfection water systems and its equipment / materials;
  • Commitment to beneficiary accountability and humanitarian principles;
  • Ability to manage and prioritise a varied workload in a rapidly changing work environment.
  • Willingness to learn and to take on extra duties as required.

  • Good computer skills including Microsoft word and excel.
  • A flexible approach to work and willingness to work additional hours or on weekends as required.

Requirements (desired)

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in monitoring and testing of water quality, disinfection water systems, water disinfection equipment and its materials … etc;
  • Previous working experience with humanitarian NGOs (WASH field), or public water and sanitation authorities a distinct advantage;
  • Good English language skills (spoken and written);
  • Good knowledge in Goal’s working context area.
