Vocational Skills Trainer – Women’s Tailoring and Handcrafting At Aid Gate Organization

Background

As part of its broader effort to enhance the social and economic inclusion of persons with disabilities (PWDs), AGO is implementing vocational training courses based on the findings of the gender and disability-sensitive market assessment . The assessment identified Women’s Tailoring and Handcrafting as one of the high-demand, feasible, and inclusive sectors for PWDs in Raqqa, Kasra, and Hajin.

This activity aims to equip women with disabilities with the necessary theoretical and practical skills to enter the workforce or initiate their own businesses in the tailoring and handcrafting sector.

Objectives of the Training

  1. Build the technical competencies required for women’s tailoring and handcrafting.
  2. Introduce participants to industry standards, quality control, and local market needs.
  3. Provide hands-on experience in garment creation, fabric handling, stitching, and decoration.
  4. Encourage creativity, entrepreneurship, and market-oriented product design.
  5. Support PWDs toward economic independence and sustainable income generation.

Training Methodology

  • Theoretical Sessions: Covering essential concepts in tailoring, handcrafting techniques, materials usage, safety practices, and business basics.
  • Practical Application: Participants will engage in hands-on activities including pattern cutting, sewing, embroidery, and producing market-ready items.
  • Inclusive Learning: All sessions will be adapted to accommodate participants’ disabilities using accessible training spaces, visual aids, Braille materials, and interpreters when needed.

Expected Outcomes

By the end of the 40-day training, participants are expected to:

  • Acquire technical skills in tailoring, fabric design, and handcrafting.
  • Produce basic women’s garments and accessories suitable for the local market.
  • Demonstrate understanding of tailoring tools, measurements, and finishing.
  • Gain confidence to pursue employment or microenterprise in the tailoring sector.
  • Understand basic business planning, customer engagement, and pricing strategies.

Target Group

  • Women and girls with disabilities from displaced, host, and returnee communities in Raqqa, Kasra, and Hajin.
  • Priority will be given to individuals who demonstrate commitment to attending the full training duration and an interest in self-employment or employment in the tailoring sector.

Trainers’ Responsibilities

  • Deliver theoretical and practical training sessions according to the approved curriculum.
  • Adapt training techniques to meet individual needs of participants with disabilities.
  • Monitor participant progress and provide ongoing feedback and motivation.
  • Maintain training materials, tools, and ensure a safe working environment.
  • Contribute to pre/post assessments and support documentation of training results.

AGO Responsibilities

  • Ensure the availability of appropriate training space and materials.
  • Provide assistive devices and accessibility accommodations.
  • Coordinate participant transportation and refreshments where applicable.
  • Conduct ongoing monitoring and provide logistical support to trainers.
  • Collect feedback and report on overall training effectiveness.

Follow-up Mechanism

  • Pre- and Post-Assessment: To evaluate knowledge and skill acquisition.
  • Daily Attendance and Participation Logs: For tracking commitment.
  • Participant Feedback Forms: To evaluate satisfaction and identify challenges.
  • Post-training Support: AGO will facilitate linkages with local markets, small grants, or referrals to employment services where available.
