About the Role
- The Open Mapping Hub – Eastern & Southern Africa (ESA Hub) supports open mapping communities and institutions across 23 countries to leverage OpenStreetMap (OSM) and in partnership with Fundação para o Desenvolvimento da Comunidade (FDC) and the Instituto Nacional de Gestão e Redução do Risco de Desastres (INGD) through its National Emergency Operations Center (CENOE) to strengthen disaster risk preparedness through participatory mapping, open data, and local capacity building.
- We are looking for a dedicated and organised Field Mapping Supervisor to support the coordination and supervision of field-based mapping activities in Buzi, Mapai, and Chókwè districts. This role is integral to the successful collection of high-quality geospatial data on vulnerable infrastructure, key services, and community exposure in disaster-prone areas.
- The Field Mapping Supervisor will work closely with the Technical Coordinator and community mappers to ensure data collection processes are professional, participatory, and aligned with national disaster preparedness efforts.
Essential functions
The Field Mapping Supervisor will work closely with the Technical Coordinator and contribute to
the following areas:
1. Field Planning and Coordination
- Plan and coordinate daily field activities across assigned project areas.
- Manage field team schedules and logistical needs (transport, equipment, supplies).
2. Field Mapping Oversight
- Supervise mapping teams collecting geospatial data on buildings, roads, health centers, schools, water points, etc.
- Train field teams on mobile data collection tools.
- Conduct field spot checks to verify the accuracy and completeness of data.
3. Data Quality Assurance
- Review collected data daily to ensure consistency and completeness.
- Provide technical feedback to field mappers and troubleshoot data collection issues in
real time.
4. Community Engagement
- Facilitate community sensitisation and ensure engagement with local leaders and
committees. - Ensure adherence to ethical and culturally sensitive data collection practices.
5. Reporting and Documentation
- Submit daily and weekly reports summarising field activities and challenges.
- Support weekly updates to the Technical Coordinator and Project Manager.
- Document lessons learned to improve future operations.
Deliverables
- Weekly fieldwork plans and activity schedules.
- Weekly data quality reports and issue logs.
- Weekly field summary reports
- Final field mapping report and data at end of the assignment detailing operations,
challenges, and recommendations.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Geomatics, Remote Sensing, Surveying, or a related
field. - Minimum 1 year of experience in GIS field mapping, participatory mapping, or data
collection projects. - Proven experience supervising teams and managing field logistics.
- Strong skills in mobile data collection tools such as ODK, KoboToolbox, or similar.
- Proficiency in GIS software such as QGIS or ArcGIS.
- Experience working with rural communities and local authorities is highly desirable.
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills.
- Fluency in both English and Portuguese is required.
Compensation
USD 1,500 per month per person
