CONTEXT

The COMBO Unit (COMmunication Brussels Operations) is a team of communication, audio-visual and digital professionals that delivers high level communication support to MSF’s operations. It serves the Brussels Operational Centre (OCB) of MSF and is part of the Communication and Fundraising Department in Brussels.

The Unit’s main tasks are to advise on and develop communications strategies and public positioning on specific contexts and to support the field teams with communication productions and day-to-day activities. As part of the COMBO Unit, the Multimedia Team provides multimedia technical vision, expertise and support. It is composed by a Multimedia manager, one Video advisor & multimedia producer, one Photo advisor & multimedia producer and a Graphic & Motion Designer.

At ease with both video and photo production and postproduction, the Photo Advisor and Multimedia producer is the focal point in OCB operational communication for everything related to photo:

  • In coordination with communication advisors and comms managers in the field, s/he identifies external photographers for specific assignments, provides guidance and technical support to communication teams in the field.
  • Ensures photo editing, but also contributes to strategic distribution through MSF offices and external channels (including MDB uploads).
  • When requested, s/he proposes, produces, manages and supervises high level video and photo communication initiatives.
  • Under the supervision of the Multimedia manager, s/he also ensures a follow-up on the budget available for photographic assignments.
  • S/he works in close collaboration with the Video Advisor & Multimedia producer and is able to cover for them when required. Together with the Video Advisor & Multimedia Producer, s/he ensures the AV equipment is up-to-date and functional at any moment.
  • S/he interacts with the Digital Unit to ensure that the photo material can have a large digital dissemination and impact.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Photo Advisor
  • Supervise the whole production of photography content related to MSF OCB operations and ensure high level ethical and quality standards.
  • Advise and provide technical support to the communication advisors and managers in the projects.
  • Define TOR (Terms of References) and manage contracts for external photographers.
  • Ensure strategic photo editing (selection) to answer operational communication needs.
  • Upload pictures on the MSF database to make them available for the whole MSF movement (including captions and metadata).
  1. Photography Network
  • Build and maintain a strong network of professional photographers and freelancers, in Belgium and worldwide. Follow closely their work and which thematic they cover.
  • Maintain close contacts with other photo advisors (or related) from other Operational Centers.
  • Represent MSF during international photo festivals.
  1. Photo and Multimedia production
  • In coordination with the other members of the Combo team, propose, produce, manage and supervise the production of multimedia content.
  • Actively participate to the different stages of production workflow (development, pre-production, production, postproduction, distribution) with strategic audiovisual inputs.
  • Cover for the Video Advisor and multimedia producer when needed.
  • Travel to MSF projects to produce multimedia content (in agreement with the Multimedia team leader and concerned Communication advisor).
  • Archive properly all photography content on local servers (in addition to the MDB).
  • Manage the photo equipment (jointly with the Video Advisor and Multimedia Producer).
  1. Training
  • Provide photo training to the Combo Team and the Field Communication Manager.
  • Provide support for media trainings arranged in-house.
  • Share lessons learnt on the production and dissemination of photo packages with the rest of the team members.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Audiovisual technologies or equivalent experience
  • Experience in project management, including managing external contractors
  • Professional photography and editing skills
  • Experience in field-based AV productions abroad in difficult conditions is an asset
  • Strong photojournalistic culture and network
  • Command of video editing tools: Final Cut Pro, Avid, Premiere and Adobe Creative Suite
  • Knowledge of multimedia or web-based interactive productions is an asset
  • Deep understanding of digital communication
  • Fluency in English and French (other language is an asset)
  • Team Player
  • Creativity, curiosity, a sense of initiative
  • Flexibility to travel
  • A good judgement of ethical aspects of communication, copyright and legal aspects
  • Mac environment

CONDITIONS
