Terms of Reference (ToR) – The Canopy Project (Phase 1)
1. Background of the Canopy Project
Justdiggit Foundation (JDI) is committed to becoming a more equitable, inclusive, and self-aware
organisation. In recent years, there has been growing recognition – both internally and externally –
of the need to critically examine how colonial histories and structures may still shape our
operations, relationships, growth, and narratives. JDI’s management has prioritized decolonisation
as a key pillar in its 2024 – 2040 strategic plan.
This ToR defines the objectives and scope of Phase1 of this project.
2. Objective of the assignment
Phase 1 entails employee sensitisation of the decolonisation theme(s) and identification of colonial
legacies within the organisation that need to be addressed to make JDI a great place to work and
strengthen its position within the sector. This phase will aid in developing the scope of the project.
Internally, the decolonisation work has been named the Canopy Project to signify protection,
interconnectivity, diversity, support, growth, dependency, teams, and dynamism. The Canopy
Project name also helps diffuse negative emotions that come from the term decolonisation and it
relates to Justdiggit’s environmental work.
3. Assignment deliverables
Phase 1 will require discussions with individuals and/or small groups and presentations of
decolonisation theme(s) to the whole organisation to increase awareness and understanding of
the topic. Additionally, the areas that need to be addressed should be collected, documented, and
used to inform the scope of the project and implementable activities in phase 2. The consultant
will be supported by a cross-cultural working group. We anticipate Phase 1 to take up 6 – 12
months. Specific deliverables are:
a) Employee sensitisation information package, strategy, and work plan,
b) Documentation of sensitisation session outcomes and themes,
c) Development of a detailed and implementable 2–3-year project scope and plan, which will
be phase 2 of the project.

a) Proven expertise on decolonisation of NGOs,
