Deputy Regional Director, Research At Amnesty International

JOB PURPOSE:

In the role of Deputy Regional Director – Research, you will be responsible for providing high-level strategic advice on major human right trends. You will be contributing to the development, management and implementation of the research strategy and overall operations of the Regional Office.

The East and South-East Asia & the Pacific Regional office plays a critical role in the Amnesty International Secretariat, gathering and communicating accurate and action-oriented human rights information and delivering on the vision to end grave human rights abuses and build societies respectful of human rights.

ABOUT YOU:

You will have previous experience of working across various human right issues, with a passion in this field. Working as the Deputy Regional Director, you will be an experienced manager and leader with the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships across the organisation.

It’s vital that you have previous extensive experience in research and advocacy across human rights, so that you are able to ensure that the research strategy is sound and focused.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage risk assessments and oversees the implementation of security procedures for regional office staff
  • Manage the development and implementation of human rights research and advocacy action plans for countries within the office’s remit, in line with globally agreed priorities and strategies.
  • Ensure compliance with globally developed quality assurance and impact assessment methodologies to ensure consistency and impartiality and measure human rights impact within the sub-region.
  • Manage risk assessments and oversee the implementation of security procedures for staff undertaking missions and travel and other instances of high risk.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Knowledge and direct experience of the human rights and political context in the region and an expert understanding of the international human rights legal framework, and relevant regional and national legal frameworks
  • In-depth experience of human rights research for advocacy purposes: conducting research using a range of appropriate methodologies, analysing and presenting findings, identifying advocacy targets, and applying research-based analysis to campaigning for human rights change
  • Experience of managing people and teams, of successfully coaching and mentoring people, and encouraging integrated and new ways of working
  • Ability to lead and manage staff and financial resources including setting, managing and monitoring plans and budgets for their team
