Content Designer and WordPress Specialist – Humanitarian Hub At International Planned Parenthood Federation

Background

IPPF maintains an internal ‘MA Forum’ website that hosts guidance, tools, and resources to support Member Associations across the Federation in over 140 countries. Within the MA Forum, dedicated sub-pages provide technical information on specific areas of work. The IPPF Humanitarian Hub is intended to support Member Associations by providing guidance and technical resources across the humanitarian cycle, from preparedness to response and recovery, and by signposting relevant documents and tools.

The core source material for the Humanitarian Hub is approximately 5,000 words, in addition to linked guidance documents, tools, and training resources. However, the content is currently difficult to navigate and use as a practical hub. It lacks clear hierarchy, structure, and framing, and parts of the content require rewriting. As a result, Member Associations struggle to orient themselves quickly, identify priority resources, and apply guidance in real-world humanitarian contexts.

Purpose of the consultancy

The purpose of this consultancy is to restructure, rewrite, and redesign the IPPF Humanitarian Hub, drawing on existing content while significantly improving clarity, usability, and visual hierarchy. The work will be carried out within the existing WordPress block-based (Gutenberg) environment and will include the use of HTML and CSS to create a user-friendly and visually clear design.

The redesigned Hub will function as a clear, usable, and sustainable internal resource, supporting Member Associations to plan, respond, and deliver sexual and reproductive health and sexual and gender-based violence services across humanitarian settings.

The redesigned Hub should:

  • Be intuitive and easy to navigate for MA users
  • Clearly signal priorities and pathways (for example “start here”, key tools, deeper guidance)
  • Balance short guidance text with curated resources
  • Reflect feminist, rights-based, and locally led humanitarian principles
  • Be visually clean and attractive
  • Be easy to maintain by non-technical editors

Scope of work

The consultant will work directly from the existing outline and materials provided and will undertake the following:

1. Content audit and information architecture

  • Review the full Humanitarian Hub outline and associated content
  • Identify core content, secondary content, and content that should be nested or linked out
  • Reduce duplication and overly technical repetition
  • Propose a clear information architecture, including:
    • Landing page structure
    • Priority thematic sections
    • Sub-sections and navigation logic
  • Define clear user journeys for different needs

2. Content rewriting and editorial framing

  • Rewrite landing page and section introductions to provide clear orientation and guidance
  • Edit and condense existing text while preserving technical accuracy
  • Ensure language is rights-based, feminist, and humanitarian in tone
  • Replace long instructional text with short framing content that points users to tools and standards
  • Ensure consistency of terminology across SRH, SGBV, MISP, and cross-cutting areas
  • Draft for approval before next stage.

3. Hub design and layout concept

  • Design a clear page structure that blends:
    • Guidance text
    • Images
    • Grouped resources
  • Define a small set of reusable layout patterns, such as:
    • Guidance plus image plus key resources
    • Resource cards or grouped links
    • Section dividers and “start here” elements
  • Advise on image use to support understanding and human context
  • Draft for approval before commencing web design.

4. WordPress build and implementation

  • Build the redesigned Humanitarian Hub directly in WordPress using Gutenberg blocks
  • Apply consistent CSS classes to support layout, spacing, and hierarchy
  • Create reusable block patterns for future updates
  • Work within existing theme, brand, and IT constraints
  • No installation of new plugins or theme changes required

5. Handover and sustainability

  • Provide brief documentation on page structure and patterns
  • Ensure the Hub can be maintained by non-technical IPPF staff
  • Support a short handover or walkthrough if required
