Survival International is a small, passionate organization that defends the rights of indigenous peoples around the world. Based in Paris, Berlin, London, Madrid, Milan, and San Francisco, we conduct public campaigns against powerful actors and have achieved many concrete changes. Entirely funded by our supporters, we remain independent.
Media visibility is central to our strategy : investigations, alerts, and analyses only have an impact if they are seen and shared. The online press and media relations officer’s role is to ensure this information is disseminated publicly.
You will work with all types of media (print, web, television, radio, podcasts, online platforms…), develop relationships with journalists and may represent the organization at interviews or events when relevant.
We are a radical organization: we challenge deeply ingrained beliefs in order to create a better world for Indigenous peoples. Therefore, you must be completely comfortable with the ideas we advocate.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategy and media relations
- Define and implement the media coverage strategy.
- Identify relevant editorial angles and propose media opportunities.
- Develop and maintain a network of journalists and newsrooms in French-speaking countries.
- Follow up with journalists after information has been disseminated and coordinate media requests.
Press content production
- Adapting, translating and distributing press releases, with occasional writing work.
- Adapt and submit for publication articles from the research and advocacy team.
- Write the newsletter presenting the media coverage (in collaboration with the Spanish office).
- Write summary documents for journalists (information notes, fact sheets, background information) to facilitate understanding of a campaign theme or event.
Public performance and public speaking
- Represent the association to the media (radio interviews, television, podcasts, online press) when the required level of expertise allows it.
- Speaking at public events (conferences, festivals, screenings and discussions, round tables, etc.).
- Adapt the message and level of detail to the target audience.
- Coordinate in advance with our team and event organizers to ensure consistency of messaging.
Digital content
- Integrate and translate, if necessary, the content provided by the teams in order to keep the website up to date.
- Integrate and update email marketing campaigns into the dedicated platform (currently Engaging Networks) using the provided content. (This task has a significant technical dimension and requires digital proficiency, attention to detail, and the ability to quickly learn new tools.)

SKILLS
Press content production
- Identify relevant media angles and formulate clear and accessible messages for non-specialist journalists.
- Adapt the tone and level of information according to the audiences (media, general public, partners) when speaking as a spokesperson.
- Be comfortable speaking in public, including in interviews (radio, television, podcasts).
Writing and processing information
- To rephrase and synthesize complex information without distorting its meaning.
- Write or adapt short texts for the media (press releases, opinion pieces, press responses).
Organization and responsiveness
- Managing simultaneous requests and changing priorities, sometimes in an emergency.
- Work independently while coordinating content, approvals and media requests with other teams.
Tools
- Mastering common digital tools (word processing, CMS, mailing…).
- Being comfortable on social media in order to identify media outlets that exclusively distribute their content there.
LANGUAGES
- French: C2
- English: C1 minimum (daily work with international teams and content translation)
- Other languages ​​are an asset (Spanish, Portuguese, German…)
Industry knowledge
- Strong interest in the functioning of the media and their evolution, including online media.
PERSONAL QUALITIES
- Being able to work independently, with more support at the start, then regular alignment points as responsibilities are mastered.
- Knowing how to organize and prioritize when several competing requests arrive simultaneously.
- Accepting a share of repetitive or operational tasks necessary for the functioning of the campaigns.
- Demonstrate initiative in solving concrete problems without waiting for detailed instructions.
- Remaining reliable and rigorous in a sometimes urgent work environment.
- To be available on an ad hoc basis outside of normal working hours during important media moments or events where Survival needs to be represented.
- Appreciate the collective work of a small, dedicated team.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION
Work location : Hybrid – Survival International office in Paris (13th arrondissement) and possibility of teleworking two days a week
Hours : Full-time (35 hours) or part-time (minimum 20 hours per week)
Salary : 26,000-28,000 euros gross per year depending on experience
Contract : One-year fixed-term contract (possibility of a permanent contract thereafter); one-month probationary period
Start date : as soon as possible
