Do you want to join an activist association and take concrete action for greater social justice?
Doctors of the World has been working for over 40 years to treat the most vulnerable populations, denounce obstacles to access to care and bring about lasting changes in health policies.
In France and in nearly 30 other countries, our actions are structured around six political battles:
- Sexual and reproductive health and rights (including the right to abortion)
- Migration, exile, rights and health
- Risk reduction
- Environmental Health
- Rights and the healthcare system
- Humanitarian spaces
Contribute to humanitarian impact, from headquarters
Doctors of the World’s commitment goes beyond the field.
At headquarters, you support projects, assist teams and ensure the quality of actions taken.
Here, you support operational teams, strengthen the security of our environments and ensure safe and stable working conditions, essential for the conduct of programs.
Why we need you
At Doctors of the World, energy is not just a matter of comfort: it determines the safety of people, the preservation of equipment and the continuity of medical activities.
Today we are creating an essential position: energy expert, to structure and secure all of our energy installations on our international programs.
You will be the key contact person to support missions in:
- electrical safety measures for buildings (offices, bases, guesthouses);
- the availability and quality of energy (avoiding outages, stabilizing voltages, preventing material risks);
- the definition, sizing and monitoring of the most suitable energy solutions for the contexts.
This position also responds to a need that has become evident: after several serious incidents within the humanitarian sector, a strong awareness has accelerated the creation of this strategic function within our association.
You will arrive at a pivotal phase: the security assessments carried out last year have made it possible to address the most critical emergencies, but the overall structure still needs to be consolidated, deployed and made sustainable.
Your tasks
👉 Electrical safety of buildings (absolute priority)
- Read, analyze and supplement the diagnoses already carried out
- Supporting local teams in bringing their facilities up to standard: works, inspections, technical choices, risk prevention
- Supporting programs in managing service providers: drafting specifications, analyzing quotes, selection, and monitoring the quality of work
- Verify, on site or remotely, that the interventions comply with the minimum standards necessary for the safety of people and equipment
👉 Energy continuity & quality
- Designing energy solutions tailored to specific uses: primary/secondary sources, load management, prioritization of needs, and consumption optimization.
- Preventing risks related to voltage fluctuations, frequent power outages, and outdated installations
- Design or adjust energy schemes (night lighting, load shedding, automatic switching, allocation of critical uses)
- Systematically integrate eco-responsible approaches whenever possible: insulation, thermal optimization, appropriate air conditioning, alternative solutions
👉 Technical support & internal structuring
- Deploy standards, guidelines and best practices, particularly those co-developed with Action Against Hunger
- Adapting certain documents to the Médecins du Monde context to facilitate their adoption by the teams
- Contributing to technical capitalization: reporting, traceability, analyses, methodological notes
👉 Coordination & support of programs
- Maintain regular contact with logistics liaisons, logistics coordinators, and logistics managers in the field.
- Working closely with the two energy advisors at Action Against Hunger, within an inter-NGO pool approach
- Responding to technical requests: equipment selection, installation sizing, and decision-making.
- Conduct approximately 3 to 4 field trips per year, generally lasting three weeks, to carry out comprehensive assessments and train local teams
Once the Médecins du Monde buildings are secure and stabilized, the position will gradually be able to include support for program infrastructure (health centers, pharmacies, hospitals) as well as for institutional partners (Ministry of Health, etc.). This dimension is expected to develop, but only at a later stage.
Your colleagues
You will be joining the operational logistics team at headquarters, working directly with logistics experts and logistics coordinators on the programs.
You will also work with the energy pool of Action Against Hunger, with whom we share some of the interventions.
The environment is dynamic, demanding but very collaborative: technical exchanges, mutual support and the flow of information are at the heart of the operation.
What you can expect from us
Through this position, you will be able to:
- To build a pioneering position and contribute to structuring new expertise within Doctors of the World.
- To consolidate a technical and operational vision of energy in a complex humanitarian environment.
- Develop your skills in diagnostics, engineering, coordination, training and support of field teams.
- Work in an environment where your expertise is highly anticipated, supported and valued.
- Participating in the skills development of an inter-NGO network around energy standards.
PROFILE
You are the right person if…
- You hold a “Bac+5” level qualification in electrical engineering (low voltage high current electricity) – with at least 5 years of professional experience, including at least one year internationally – or a “Bac+2 or +3” level qualification in electrical engineering – with at least 8 years of professional experience, including at least one year internationally
- You know how to create a connection even remotely: making contact easily, building trust, listening, rephrasing, and maintaining smooth follow-up with a variety of interlocutors.
- You have a knack for teaching: you like to explain, simplify, make technical subjects accessible, and you know how to adapt your speech to each context and level of understanding.
- You know how to work in a structured way: monitoring several countries, tracking exchanges, documenting decisions and organizing your priorities does not scare you.
- You communicate easily in English and are comfortable conducting written and oral exchanges with teams spread across the world.
This position is not for you if…
- You prefer to work on theoretical topics rather than getting your hands dirty with concrete and sometimes complex technical problems.
- You are not comfortable with the idea of working remotely with many sites simultaneously, while maintaining rigorous monitoring and regular exchanges.
- Situations where you need to simplify technical concepts for non-specialist audiences are not part of your comfort zone.
- You don’t like documenting, writing or formalizing: the position requires clear reporting, traceability and written analyses.
- You are looking for a purely “headquarters”, stable and sedentary role: here, 3 to 4 field trips per year, sometimes long (about three weeks), are essential.
- You want a structured framework already in place: this is a pioneering position, where much remains to be built, adjusted and co-defined with several internal and external stakeholders.
- You are not comfortable with the idea of intervening on subjects that have a direct impact on the safety of people and facilities.
- You are afraid that you do not identify with the values and activist stance of Doctors of the World.
