The position is open nationally in Haiti and is intended for Haitian personnel. It is not an expatriate position.
To provide obstetric care to pregnant women and their babies, to carry out follow-up before, during and after delivery, in accordance with MSF obstetric and reproductive health protocols , universal hygiene and standards of newborn care, and under the supervision of a specialist doctor, in order to ensure their health condition and avoid post-delivery complications.
- Ensure the establishment and continuity of prenatal and postnatal care, family planning, obstetric care (BEmONC[1] and CEmONC[2]), neonatal abortion service, management of victims of sexual violence, infections of the reproductive system and fistula care in accordance with the main reproductive set of MSF activities, and consolidate the implementation of standardized protocols.
- Where PMTCT is implemented, ensure the implementation of the PMTCT protocol during childbirth and PNC consultations (pre-counseling, testing and post-counseling).
- Collaborating with the doctor and/or nurse in the management of sexual violence cases
- Evaluate the feasibility of referring pregnant women from traditional deliveries to OPD/MCH for medical evaluation and/or complicated deliveries.
- Ensure that hygiene and sterilization criteria (including universal precautions) are met in accordance with MSF specifications.
- Perform minor maintenance and cleaning of medical equipment according to the instructions in the user manual and established protocols. Inform the medical supervisor of any malfunctions of medical devices.
- Ensure a regular and continuous supply of medicines and equipment needed for maternity activities (including monitoring/consumption control/placing orders).
- Appropriate follow-up of all newborns from delivery to discharge, informing mothers and parents of the importance of breastfeeding, vaccination and possible complications resulting from harmful traditional practices.
- Ensuring that patients’ rights to privacy and confidentiality are respected
- To monitor that the administrative procedures for admissions and hospitalizations comply with MSF protocols , and also to verify that patients are properly informed and receive the necessary documents (birth certificate, vaccination card, etc.)
- Participate in the organization of the service in collaboration with the other midwives and the maternity supervisor.
- Ensure the transfer of relevant information to the team that replaces you (in particular identification of at-risk cases) § In accordance with current MSF protocols , conduct normal deliveries independently, manage obstetric emergencies; identify cases requiring referral and send them in a timely manner, clean the newborn, perform and record the first neonatal medical procedures (sectioning and cleaning of the umbilical cord, vaccination, etc.), detect possible anomalies/infections in the newborn and report them to the doctor, in order to ensure effective interventions.
- Monitor the use of medicines, facilities and obstetric equipment, in order to ensure, according to the number of patients and prescriptions, rational use, as well as pharmacy stock levels are permanently updated, kept in good conditions and at the minimum level of security.
* * [1] BEmONC = basic emergency obstetric and neonatal care = administration of antibiotics, oxytocics, anticonvulsants, manual removal of the placenta, removal of retained products following abortion, assisted vaginal delivery, preferably with vacuum extraction, and neonatal care, including neonatal resuscitation. [2] CEmONC = comprehensive obstetric and neonatal care = all of BEmONC plus surgery (cesarean section, hysterectomy, laparotomy), safe blood transfusion, and care for sick and low birth weight newborns.
- Ensure that the full package of holistic care that MSF offers to non-(special cases) and survivors of sexual violence is provided without judgment or discrimination according to MSF’s criteria and protocols on the SGBV project in Haiti;
- Ensure follow-up of adherence and compliance with Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) as well as follow-up of appointments in collaboration with nurses and doctors, and keep up-to-date data on follow-up visits by noting them in the appropriate data tool;
- Participate in reception and awareness activities in the waiting room and in departmental meetings;
- Conduct medical and follow-up consultations for survivors of gender-based violence according to the care protocol;
- Complete the patients’ medical records upon their admission and the documents for medication and medical equipment consumption following consultations;
- Explain the treatment, administer the first dose and ensure that the patient or their companion has fully understood the prescription; if necessary, ask the doctor for further details or advice;
- Inform and reassure patients’ families about lifestyle (body, clothing, food, housing). Discuss taboos and traditional practices (herbal teas, steaming, foods, etc.), and offer contraceptive methods (and help them start using them if needed).
- Keep up-to-date data on follow-up visits and consultations by recording them in the appropriate data tool
- Perform Intrauterine Manual Aspiration (IUA) for patients who meet the criteria;
- Joining the new Human Resources structure which consists of a shared consultation (Midwife – Psychologist or Doctor-Midwife);
- Please respect medical confidentiality and infection control and prevention measures;
- Perform additional tasks as instructed by the supervisor.Requirements
- Education
- State-recognized qualification or specialization in midwifery is essential.
- MSPP license required.

- Essential professional experience of at least two years in related positions in a hospital or pre/postnatal clinic setting
