About MiCT:

Media in Cooperation and Transition (MiCT) gGmbH is a German media development organisation that implements projects in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. MiCT’s activities focus on the interplay between conflict, media coverage and reconciliation.

For the past 12 years MiCT has been conducting investigative reporting training and has produced investigative reports in cooperation with local journalists in Iraq, Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Sudan & South Sudan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Maldives, as well as several countries in Sub-Saharan Africa.

About the Project:

Media in Cooperation and Transition (MiCT) will investigate and refine the role that media can play in strengthening social cohesion in Nineveh. In this programme, we will invite applications for young media makers and journalists to a research and production process in which they (1) jointly investigate and critically analyse existing media content in local media (2) jointly study audience perception and audience assessment of media content pertaining to social cohesion and peace (3) engage in critical discussion about the role that local media play in Ninevehs’ societal transition (4) finally, based on analysis and insight, produce and disseminate media formats that help enhance social cohesion in Nineveh.

This consultancy will design the research with the lead researcher and lead the workshops in Arabic, conduct the discourse through this programme, and contribute to report writing.

Work frame & time commitment through a series of workshops:

  1. Workshop 1: Participatory Action Research with Journalists from Niniveh: literature review on social cohesion, media mapping for local media in Niniveh, Content Analysis, Designing Focus Group Discussions
  2. Workshop 2: Format Development and Coordination with local Media Outlets (5 days):

Meeting key media outlets in Nineveh – radio, TV, online, and social media -, present findings from the PAR research (workshop 1) and collaboratively develop formats for peace media as well as work plans for implementation.

Between workshop 2 and 3, program participants will join production of content and help build and feed a social media platform for dissemination of content. They will also engage in joint production and dissemination of journalistic pieces with local media outlets.

  1. Workshop 3: Participatory Evaluation (3 days): Critical discussion about the course and outcome of the joint effort. How well did the project perform in the eyes of the participants?

Main Outputs:

(1) Support selection of participants for programme,
(2) Selection of content for content analysis in workshops
(3) Workshop 1/preparation of the Workshops 2

(4) Implement all workshops in Erbil
(5) Facilitation of Workshop 2
(6) Facilitation of Workshop 3
(7) Review and analyze content deriving from collaboration
(8) Compile and submit Research Report

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Post-graduate degree or extensive experience (min 5 years) with Master’s Degree in a field related to the media sector in Iraq
  • Strong English and Arabic language communications skills, oral and written
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant, current research methods in mapping and synthesis, including experience in Participatory Action Research (PAR) methodologies and Communication for Development (C4D)
  • Demonstrated experience in leading focus groups, stakeholder analysis and workshops
  • Proven experience and familiarity with the political environment in Iraq; writing policy papers, analysis, and providing research on media development in Iraq.
  • Experience providing research analysis on Iraqi media landscape to governments, NGOs, and international organizations
  • Experience leading/teaching programmatic themes that include qualitative research methods, international journalism, media and development
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a decentralized network with a culturally diverse and international team
  • Ability to travel internationally for work as needed
