Center for Civilians in Conflict (CIVIC) works to improve protection for civilians caught in conflict zones. CIVIC envisions a world in which no civilian is harmed in conflict. Our mission is to support communities affected by conflict in their quest for protection and to strengthen the resolve and capacity of armed actors to prevent and respond to civilian harm. We are advocates who believe that no civilian caught in conflict should be ignored, and we are advisors who provide practical solutions to preventing and responding to civilian harm. CIVIC is a growing, $15M U.S 501(c)(3) with 120 employees, dual headquarters in Washington, D.C. and The Hague, The Netherlands, and a satellite office in New York City; and programmatic offices in multiple conflict-affected countries around the world.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Senior Director, Finance and Operations (SDFO) is responsible for leading the financial and accounting; safety and security; and administrative – including policies, contracts and legal, information technology, HQ and satellite office administration, and facilities management – functions within our organization.

As part of the Senior Management Team (SMT), the SDFO will work closely with the SMT to develop strategies, programs, models, policies, and processes to meet the organization’s goals, as well as related targets and success metrics to report on performance to the board of directors. The SDFO will lead the organizational development and implementation of CIVIC’s operational model. The SDFO will work closely with senior leaders and field office colleagues across the organization and the globe to understand and respond to challenges to this model, whether financial, regulatory, safety and security, or resource allocation.

As the SDFO of CIVIC, you will bring strong experience gained within international organizations, preferably INGOs, at senior-level positions. Your 15+ years track record having been responsible for financial and operational management experience, your cross-cultural fluency with a commitment to DEI, and your demonstrated strengths in organizational development, strategic planning, and problem-identification and resolution in a global NGO with multiple country field offices and programs will be essential to this position. You will bring a can-do attitude that will lead and mentor staff with accountability and transparency across multiple countries bringing emotional intelligence, tact, poise and diplomacy across all interactions. Alongside this, your strong communication and presentation skills and a deep passion and commitment to the mission of CIVIC will be of utmost importance. Fluent and strong written and oral communication skills in English. French or Arabic is a plus. An MBA and/or CPA/CGMA are highly preferred.

This position can be based in CIVIC offices in The Hague, The Netherlands, or Washington D.C., United States and requires a minimum of two days in the office per week. CIVIC would also be open to considering someone with an already established presence in Brussels, Belgium. International travel is around 10%. Compensation is commensurate with experience.

An executive search exercise is being undertaken by Perrett Laver, who will support CIVIC in helping to identify the widest possible field of qualified candidates and assisting in the assessment of candidates against the requirements for the roles. The closing date for applications for the role is at 9am CET on Monday 13th March 2023.

Applications will be considered by the Appointment Advisory Committee in mid-March. Perrett Laver will conduct preliminary discussions with longlisted candidates in late March, and the Committee will then meet in early April to decide on a shortlist of candidates. These individuals will subsequently be invited for formal interviews in mid-April. Selection of and negotiations with the preferred candidate will take place thereafter.
