Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.
Context:
Background Information
Following the conclusion of the negotiations and formal adoption of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) in Marrakesh and New York in December 2018, IOM is the Secretariat and Coordinator of the UN Network on Migration. This is within the backdrop of the ongoing UN Reform, and the work to better support Member States to achieve the 2030 Agenda.
The IOM County Office is seeking to assist the Government of Egypt in identifying priorities of the GCM implementation at a country and regional level. IOM provides technical and policy support to Member States and assists countries in achieving the GCM Objectives.
Furthermore, IOM, at the country level, is co-chairing the Mixed Migration Working Group (MMWG), reference WG for the migrant and refugee inclusion and social protection in the country.
The IOM Office in Cairo’s Liaison and Policy Unit works to support the Government in the area of Migration Policy including the participation of the upcoming Regional GCM reviews in the Arab countries and Africa, and in the rollout of the Country Strategy. The unit furthermore conducts active outreach with the International Community through conducting regular National and Regional (in coordination with RO) Partner Briefings as well as internally, with frequent briefing sessions on a variety of topics.
Supervision
Under the overall supervision of the IOM COM, and the direct supervision of the Head, Project Coordination, the successful candidate will be responsible for providing overall administrative and programmatic support in the day-to-day functions of the staff of the IOM Country Office.
Core Functions / Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the unit’s overall work to strengthen relationship with the regional institutions, UN agencies, academia, and other relevant stakeholders, dissemination of IOM policies and positions, promotion of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM), the migration related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
- Support the preparation, organization, implementation and follow up of internal and external meetings, virtual capacity building workshops, events, conferences; including take notes, compile inputs and prepare Note for File (NFF) for meetings, conferences, webinars, workshops.
- Assist in the planning and coordination of internal and external events, such as conferences, meetings, workshops, and virtual capacity building workshops and teleconferences, including all administrative and logistical arrangements in close coordination with procurement and logistics staff.
- Draft presentations, concept notes, talking points and background documents required for meetings, conferences, workshops, or other respective events, inclusive of donor and partners coordination.
- Provide project development support to the Head, Project Coordination and the Project Development Officer, both offline and through PRIMA, on development and reporting of ongoing project activities and expenditures.
- Support CO Cairo Liaison and Policy Unit communication work including and not limited to drafting press briefing notes, statements, social media posts and other visibility tools while ensuring accurate, effective media-friendly messaging. Assist in dissemination of media content on relevant CO social media and websites.
- Contribute to coordination with country offices, headquarters and regional offices on respective queries, compilation of requests, and/or organization of regional events.
- Contribute to outreach and partnership opportunities in the region, inclusive of regional entities.
- Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience:
Education
University degree preferably in Political or Social Sciences, Law and /or Business Administration, or alternatively, from an accredited academic institution, or an equivalent combination of relevant training and field experience.
Experience
- Experience in the field of migration issues is an asset;
- Experience working in an international organization an advantage;
- Experience in humanitarian and policy work, including volunteer assignments, preferably on migration related policy issues an advantage.
Skills
Familiarity with migrant rights; the different aspects of migration and refugee law; trafficking in persons; and voluntary return and reintegration.
Languages
IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish.
For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of Arabic and/or French is an advantage.
Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

The selected candidate for this internship position will work on site (in the country of the duty station where this position is based). Interns will receive a monthly stipend, and the travel and visa costs will also be covered.

In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:
