ELECTRICIAN, GS-5 At United Nations

The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) provides critical Supply Chain, Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies services and Training to all Secretarial Entities, Peacekeeping and Special Political missions, Agencies, Funds and Programmes of the UN system worldwide.

This position is located in the Campus Support Unit (CSU), of the Central Service at the United Nations Global Service Centre, Brindisi, Italy.

The Electrician is under the general supervision of the Facilities Management Officer.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority the Electrician will be responsible for the following duties:

• Assists with the installation, service and maintenance, in compliance with Local and International IEC standards and regulations pertaining to safety and installation codes, of all types of low voltage; interior and exterior electrical systems, parts and equipment including electrical circuits, distribution panels, conduits, light fixtures, appliances, control devices, fire alarms, electrical motors and pumps and substation power distribution networks.
• Diagnoses and resolves electrical problems.
• Assists the supervising engineer with installation, maintenance and repair of complete power distribution systems including conductors, distribution of main and sub panels, earth connections, switchgear, circuit breakers, coaxial communication circuits, fiber-optic systems, and street lightning.
• Assists in operating a wide variety of tools and power equipment including saws, drills, common workshop machinery, voltage testers, ohmmeters, multi meters, oscilloscopes, soldering equipment and other tools equipment of the trade.
• Works from various manuals, blueprints, specifications, shop/building drawings and sketches and schematics.
• Assists with the installation, repair, adjustment and service of electric motors, pumps, switchgear, and electric control devices. Performs routine diagnostics, preventive maintenance of all types of electrical service devices, programmable logic controllers and digital solid-state control devices.
• Assists in enforcing the safety programs related to the safe operation of electrical installations.
• Assists the supervising electrician in assessing installation, repair and maintenance requirements, and prepares work-orders.
• Assists in managing and maintaining database records relating to inventories, work-orders and general correspondence. Makes arithmetic calculations related to installation requirements etc.
• Assists the supervising generator technician with the preparation of requisitions for electrical materials, equipment, cable, distribution panels, and spare-parts budgets etc.
• Has the ability to make sound decisions in consultation with the supervising engineer in a manner consistent with the essential for job functions.
• Performs other duties as required.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Job – Specific Qualification

A recognized and valid National Electricians license is required.

Work Experience

A minimum of five (05) years of experience in installation, repair and servicing of electrical distribution systems, electric motors, switching gear, industrial electrical installations is required.

A minimum of three (3) years of experience working in a private or public company, or military organization, is required.
