Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Funding Trends and Resource Mobilization Unit (FTRM) of the External Relations and Partnerships Section (ERPS), Partnerships and Resource Mobilization Branch, Humanitarian Financing and Resource Mobilization Division, Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Geneva. OCHA is the part of the United Nations Secretariat responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to emergencies and natural disasters. OCHA also ensures there is a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response effort. OCHA’s mission is to mobilize and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors in order to alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies; advocate the rights of people in need; promote preparedness and prevention and facilitate sustainable solutions.
The incumbent of the post reports to the Head of FTRM.
Responsibilities
Within limits of delegated authority, the Graphic Design Assistant may be responsible for the following duties:
• Independently undertakes design assignments, including high priority requests, for a variety of UN sponsored events (e.g. high-level conferences, Member States briefings, ECOSOC, global appeal launches).
• Systematically aggregates and presents information, including financial data, from a wide variety of UN, NGO, and international organization sources and collaborates with internal and external actors in the collection of data, and the design and preparation of presentations, tables, charts, data sets, and/or graphics to facilitate in-depth analysis and communication of the retrieved information.
• Leads or participates in initial meetings with clients to discuss potential design projects, and their substantive content, communication objectives, media (including electronically published products) and design options, technical specifications, costs, schedules/deadlines, etc.
• Provides guidance and support throughout the project production process; coordinates and follows up with clients and other relevant parties (e.g. copy and proofreaders, production staff, translators, etc.) and ensures that project is on schedule.
• Ensures coherent branding for resource mobilization events and products.
• Produces camera-ready documents for reproduction by formatting complex documents in desktop publishing layout; determines specifications for size, paper, typesetting, layout, illustrations, colors, for print documents, posters, banners, etc.
• Ensures that the final products and/or global templates are correctly used in a wide range of graphic adaptations and languages by advising and coordinating with other designers and Information Management Officers in the field, and reviewing output.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Education
• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Specialized training in Graphic Arts supplemented by a diploma or certificate is desirable.
• Must have passed the United Nations Global General Services Test or United Nations Administrative Support Assessment Test (ASAT) at Headquarters or an equivalent locally-administered test at Offices Away.
Work Experience
At t least seven (7) years of experience in publications production, including desktop publishing, graphic design and layout, or related area of which preferably two (2) years within the United Nations Common System.
Experience in collecting and researching data across various areas of social economic development or related area is desirable.
Experience in ensuring adherence to UN editorial rules, style and branding is desirable.
Experience in graphic art, creative designs, and high-quality graphic material for varied print and digital media is desirable.
Specialized training in graphic arts is highly desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of French or Spanish is desirable.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

• Passing the Global General Service Test (GGST) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Services and related categories in the United Nations Secretariat. Applicants who have not passed the GGST at the time of application may be invited for the test after submitting an application. Staff members who were granted a fixed-term, continuing or permanent appointment as a result of having passed a predecessor test recognized by the Office of Human Resources Management, and who have continuously held such appointments, are not required to take the new test.
