(Digital) security expert At Media in Cooperation and Transition

MiCT is seeking a (digital) security expert (individual or organisation) that can provide advice on (digital) security best practices for journalists.MiCT invites interested and qualified applicants to submit proposals by 10.12.2023

  1. Introducing MiCT

Media in Cooperation and Transition (MiCT) is a non-profit organisation delivering expert media services in complex and challenging contexts with passion, precision and agility. Through our collaborative work with our partners, we foster transparent, inclusive and fair dialogue supporting resilient societies that thrive.

Across three continents and 15 countries, MiCT facilitates the training of journalists and media producers, programme and content development, radio and film production, magazine and book publishing, media research and monitoring, in addition to supporting the financial viability of our partners.

2. The Program

The MiCT Critical Voices Fellowship is aimed at media professionals from war and crisis regions who share a common value in their professional journalistic integrity. The program is currently focused on journalists and media makers from Afghanistan, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Myanmar, Sudan and other conflict contexts. Fellows receive expert safety advice, online training, legal advice, psycho-social support, production support, and access to a global community of like-minded media professionals.

3. Description of the role

Through its partners, and a global digital security curriculum (5 pages) MiCT provides security support to over 500 Fellows including journalists and media makers from over 15 countries. To ensure global coherence and quality control across all contexts, MiCT is looking for the following services:

  1. 6*45min training sessions on (digital) security basics in journalism, conducted online or in-person
  2. Provision of written, audio and video content to provide content of training sessions from 3A in an asynchronous format on a digital platform
  3. Review of existing resources & trainers. This would include:
  4. interest analysis with trainers/partners from 5 regional contexts to identify key areas of existing expertise and required support
  5. review of the 5 page digital security curriculum
  6. suggestion of an updated (digital) security curriculum ( based on the above
  7. Providing detailed training the trainer outline for regional experts and team members, based on the curriculum outlined in B (maximum 1 day training)
  8. Conducting Training of trainers, invoiced per one day training unit
  9. Ad-hoc (digital) security consultation invoiced at an hourly rate for up to 50hours
  10. Translation of updated security curriculum and resources as per request

Selection does not guarantee full provision of service. Each service (A-F) should be able to be offered independently and will be paid based on actual service provided. Services are to be begun in 2023, upon contract signing and completed in agreement with MiCT until 31.12.2024. The contract will be a service contract, under § 14 UVgO of German procurement law.

4. Application Requirements

Successful applicants should be able to provide proof of the following:

  • In-depth knowledge of (digital) security questions
  • Expansive experience training and curriculum development, both online and offline
  • Experience with (digital) security questions in various international settings
  • Experience working with journalists and people in active crisis and conflict regions preferred
  • Working knowledge of English is required.
  • Access to translators with sufficient topical knowledge in Arabic, French, Burmese, Ukrainian, Russian, Dari and Pashto.

  1. 4.5 hour training session, in 45min intervals. To be provided up to 4* per year
  2. Provision of full pre-recorded and written content, as well as two review cycles with digital infrastructure provider

  5. One day training session. To be provided up to 4* per year

  7. Translation per 1000 words, up to a maximum of 20.000 words
