Project Manager – Addressing the Misuse, Diversion, and Abuse of Arms Exports in Latin America At Global Rights Compliance

GRC is an international human rights law and development firm based in the Hague, committed to promoting international law, particularly international humanitarian law (IHL) and human rights. Our Business and Human Rights team works on several projects globally, in collaboration with governments to strengthen the regulatory environment, with businesses to raise their standards, and with civil society organisations (CSOs) and communities to build capacity on access to remedy for human rights violations.

We are looking for a candidate to join our BHR team as a Project Manager, based in Guatemala, focused on enabling civil society efforts to use strategic litigation to address the misuse, diversion, and abuse of Arms exports in Guatemala.

The Role

The Project Manager will assist the Project Director and Legal Adviser with advocacy and coordination in Guatemala, including managing relationships with partners, conducting training and outreach with CSOs, organising training and conferences, and coordinating travel. The Project Manager will help design and deliver training to build the capacity of Guatemalan CSO’s to lead strategic litigation cases and implement corporate accountability strategies to promote responsible corporate firearms export policies.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinating activities with partners in Guatemala
  • Researching legal and regulatory avenues for remedy for victims of armed violence in Guatemala
  • Preparing and conducting capacity-building activities with civil society organizations
  • Organising conferences and training sessions

Qualifications and Background

We are looking for a candidate:

  • based in Guatemala;
  • with 3 or more years of experience working with civil society or international organisations on human rights issues;
  • with a degree in law, international relations, human rights, or a related subjects.
  • knowledge of international human rights and business and human rights is an asset;
  • who has practical experience working with a variety of stakeholders including civil society organizations in Guatemala, and governmental and intergovernmental institutions;
  • is fluent in English and Spanish;
  • is able to work on their own initiative and with limited supervision, without requiring detailed guidance to get started but who can be given a desired outcome and figure out the action areas required to reach it;
  • is able to work as part of a multicultural team working towards a common goal and respectful of differentiating working approaches;
  • who is flexible, versatile, and creative and able to work in a changeable & fast-moving environment, and capable of spontaneously supporting project deliverables that are not in their remit where needed;
  • with a proactive character, suggesting solutions and approaches, anticipating problems, and foreseeing potential challenges;
  • able to think practically, to break down and pursue the elements required to operationalize a strategy;
  • administratively competent; able to manage competing urgent demands.

This position is a consultancy, allowing the selected candidate the flexibility to pursue parallel academic or professional endeavors as long as they fulfill the agreed-upon outputs.
