Recruitment Of A Consultant For The Facilitation Of The Training Workshop For Trainers Of Media Actors In Dssr At Ipas

Statement of Work

  1. Rationale:

Media actors play a crucial role in promoting sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR). Their influence and ability to reach a wide audience make them key players in raising awareness, education and the promotion of rights related to sexual and reproductive health.

Issues surrounding sexual and reproductive health are often delicate and complex. Cultural sensitivity, stigma, taboo surrounding sexuality issues and lack of confidentiality are all challenges that compromise appropriate media coverage of SRHR issues.

Media coverage can help reduce stigma or raise issues related to sexual and reproductive health. The media has the power to influence public opinion. Ethical and informed media coverage can also generate public engagement on sexual and reproductive health issues. The media therefore play a role in educating the public and can help create a more informed and understanding society.

To fulfill this role effectively, media actors must strengthen their capacities to understand these topics in depth, access reliable sources and provide accurate information to the public.

Appropriate training helps media actors to be aware of cultural differences, avoid stereotypes and respect the diversity of perspectives. This also allows them to adopt a balanced, non-stigmatizing and respectful approach, thus contributing to the elimination of stigma.

  1. Context :

Sexual Rights and Reproductive Health (SRHR) are essential to ensure the health and well-being of populations, particularly young people. However, many cultural, social and political barriers hinder young people’s access to comprehensive information and quality sexual and reproductive health services, including safe abortion care. These challenges have a negative impact on the health and rights of young people, compromising their autonomy and well-being.

According to the WHO, in 2020, 40% of pregnancies in Africa were unwanted. This strongly contributes to unsafe abortions. Nine (9) million unsafe abortions were performed in Africa in 2019, leading to serious complications for many women and a high number of preventable maternal deaths.

In 2020, the rate of maternal deaths in sub-Saharan Africa was approximately 533 deaths per 100,000 live births according to UNFPA.

In this context, Ipas Afrique Francophone is recruiting a consultant to provide training for media trainers for ethical, sensitive and informed coverage of issues related to sexual and reproductive health rights.
