Your Challenge
War Child Holland (WCH) is an independent and impartial international non-governmental organization investing in a peaceful future for children and young people affected by armed conflict. We strive to empower children and young people while enabling adults to bring about positive and lasting change in the lives of conflict affected children and young people. WCH’s Research and Development (R&D) department is responsible for the rigorous development and evaluation of a holistic, multi-level and interconnected care system with interventions focused on child protection, education and psychosocial support and supportive approaches enabling accessibility and quality. WCH has recently been named a recipient of the Knowledge and Innovation Exchange (KIX) global grant from International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the Global Partnership for Education (GPE). This grant funds research to support the adaptation and scaling of evidenced education programmes, which WCH aims to do on the Can’t Wait to Learn programme in Uganda, Sudan and Chad.
Can’t Wait to Learn (CWTL) is a curriculum-aligned, reading and numeracy education programme centred on a serious gaming approach delivered via a tablet. It is designed to address some of the many challenges of access to quality education in conflict-affected settings. CWTL was first developed in Sudan for children living in areas where formal education infrastructure was unavailable. To date, multiple mixed-methods research studies on CWTL have been conducted and show promising results, including significant increases in mathematics and reading competency as well as improvement to multiple dimensions of psychosocial wellbeing. As a Researcher for KIX you will be responsible for leading some of the KIX studies and supporting the conduct of others. In this role you report to the Director of Research and Development and work directly with the KIX programme manager.
This position can be stationed in the countries where WCH has its offices (the successful candidate needs to be eligible to work in that location; preference given to local candidates).
Your responsibilities
· To be the focal point for consultant-led value for money analyses of CWTL (incl. design choices, data coordination, project management)
· To lead a feasibility and validation study, in preparation for a randomized controlled trial
· To evaluate and finalize quality assurance tools currently under development
· To support coordination of a randomized controlled trial
· To conduct data analyses as needed, in collaboration with a statistician and other members of the research team.
Your Profile
Essential requirements:**
· Relevant master’s degree and advanced or further training related to complex research projects, or relevant experience
· Minimal 3 years of relevant research experience, preferably with a broad range of quantitative and qualitative research methods, design and analysis with some or all of that experience in a low- or middle-income country or humanitarian setting
· Familiarity with implementation science and capacity building of researchers
· Significant experience with different study designs (eg., randomized control trials, ideally in settings of adversity (conflict, urban slums, violence etc.))
· Team worker who can work together with research and non-research colleagues
· Able to think through randomization, sampling issues and analysis plans
· Advanced familiarity with SPSS and NVivo
· Enjoy managing large data sets and is able to undertake appropriate advanced quantitative data analysis
· Support the capacity strengthening of colleagues
· Demonstrable experience in data cleaning, quantitative and qualitative analyses of data sets in Stata/SPSS/NVivo or similar software package, and writing scientific articles or reports
· Full professional proficiency in English, preferably with a minimum of B1 level French
· Affinity with War Child’s mandate, values and mission
· Eligibility to work in the country where WCH has an office
· Available 40 hours per week, ideally able to start in September 2021
Desirable qualifications:
· Experience in research coordination, or a related role in a field-based project
· Experience in validating measurement tools
· Experience in conducting or collaborating on a value for money analysis
· Experience in conducting or collaborating on a randomized control trial
· Collaboration experience with governmental bodies and international organizations.
Our offer **
Depending on the duty station, local contract with salary and secondary labour conditions based on the local salary scale and T&C will apply. An indicative salary range for the position stationed in Amsterdam and some general labor conditions are as following:
· Salary range from €3535 to €4664 gross per month, based on 40 hours week (the exact step determined by the years of your relevant working experience)
· Laptop to work from any location
· Possibility to follow (online) trainings and/or courses and attend War Child’s events
· Contract for a period of 20 months (prolongation might be possible)
