A key part of who we are organizationally is our three-pronged approach to making change: training community and legal activists, strategic legal work in defense of human rights and demanding corporate accountability, and campaigns to promote systemic governmental and corporate policy change. Our work focuses on climate justice and accountability, earth rights defenders, and corporate accountability.

Position Overview

The Mekong Campaign Director spearheads ERI’s campaign efforts at the Mekong regional level, ensuring they align with and advance the organization’s principles, mission, and vision. They oversee the development and execution of campaign strategies and implementation plan in collaboration with the Mekong Legal Director. They lead coordination with ERI’s constituents and partners in the Mekong region, assessing and recommending activities relevant to ERI’s focus issues and geographic priorities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of highly capable campaigners and policy advocates toward achievement of EarthRights’ strategic plan goals.
  • Manage day-to-day operations of the Mekong campaigns program, including resource allocation and budget management.
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and integration of campaign and advocacy strategies according to strategic plan goals and EarthRights’ theory of change.
  • Lead coordination with ERI’s constituencies, partners, and stakeholders in the Mekong region.
  • Support the Mekong countries region and advise on curriculum and recruitment strategies for training programs as needed.
  • Coordinate regional and global technical support for the Mekong team and represent EarthRights publicly in meetings and the media.
  • Collaborate with the Communications department to oversee media activities in Mekong countries and approve program materials and publications.
  • Maintain relationships with alumni partners in the Mekong region and facilitate training, workshops, and alumni-focused initiatives.
  • Ensure monitoring, evaluation, and learning processes inform program improvements and decision-making.
  • Collaborate on developing grant proposals, funding reports, and provide monthly program updates.

Accountability

The Mekong Campaign Director is directly accountable for the following:

  • Successful implementation and completion of Mekong campaign program objectives.
  • Efficient and responsible utilization of resources, including budget, personnel, and time.
  • A well-coordinated and effective team that consistently adheres to organizational policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Strong relationships and partnerships with ERI’s constituencies and partners in the Mekong region.
  • Increased impact of ERI’s campaigns, aligned with the organization’s principles, mission, and vision.
  • Enhanced outreach and advocacy efforts related to EarthRights’ focus issues and geographical priority areas.
  • A secure work environment with well-coordinated risk mitigation plans, and with utmost regard for the security and safety of team members and partners.

Competencies and Qualifications

  • Degree in a relevant field and/or equivalent experience required.
  • Minimum 6 years of experience in relevant field or at least 8 years of experience implementing campaigns and policy advocacy strategies with human rights and environmental rights organizations.
  • Proven experience managing and leading programs, including planning, delivery, risk management, financial management, budgeting, networking, monitoring, evaluation, and learning.
  • Demonstrated experience using campaigning strategies to demand corporate accountability, with a strong understanding of Business and Human Rights concepts.
  • At least 3 years of experience in people management.
  • Knowledge of the context of the Mekong region, with a background in environmental and human rights or community organizing work in the region.
  • Excellent cross-cultural communication skills and experience working with diverse groups, especially from Southeast Asia.
  • Ability to research, analyze, and respond to emerging contexts and trends, with high attention to detail and quality.
  • Strong computer and digital skills, particularly in Microsoft Office.
  • Experience in resource mobilization, donor relationship management, and working collaboratively with grassroots community movements, organizations, and international NGOs.
  • Fluency in English, with knowledge of a language spoken in the Mekong region preferred.
  • Demonstrated understanding of gender and social inclusion issues in the Mekong countries and the ability to integrate them into development approaches.
  • Must be based or willing to relocate to Chiang Mai, Thailand
