Education Assistant Coordinator At Jesuit Refugee Service

JRS is an international Catholic organisation that provides specialised support to refugees and other forcibly displaced people. Our mission is to accompany, serve and defend the rights of refugees and other forcibly displaced persons. This mission is based on a faith in God present in human history, even in its most tragic moments.

JRS is currently working in the Tanzania refugee camps located in Kigoma region, having three departments: one for education, another one for psychosocial support and the last one for reconciliation. Under its inclusive education projects, JRS is looking for an Education Assistant Coordinator with knowledge in inclusive education who will be based in Kigoma region (Kibondo or Kasulu).

  1. Description of Roles and responsibilities
  • Under the supervision of the Education Coordinator, the Assistant is responsible for formal education activities in the refugee camps and host community and must have a continuous presence in the implementation zone.
  • Responsible for school data entry and database updating.
  • Conducting regular follow-up on implementation of education activities, including pedagogical follow-up of teachers and students, especially those with disabilities.
  • Maintaining an updated database of JRS materials and equipment in the refugee camp, doing continuous follow-up of these materials and equipment to ensure they are well maintained.
  • Support school directors and their assistants in any administrative task related to JRS education activities
  • Collaborate in the preparation of teacher, student and parent training, with a focus on inclusive education.
  • Implement activities with youth clubs for gender, environmental or other related matters.
  • Conduct capacity building meetings to teachers under the supervision of the education coordinator.
  • Prepare and conduct distribution of education materials.
  • Collaborate in the preparation and distribution of assistive devices for children with disabilities.
  • Liaise with incentive workers in the camps and the education coordinator for the identification of beneficiaries.
  • Organize regular meetings with school administrators, their assistants, and parents of students.
  • Organize education awareness campaigns.
  • Student follow-up in and out of school with special attention to girls and students with special needs.
  • Provide all data to the Education Coordinators for project reporting and collaborate in activity reports when requested by the education coordinator.
  • Collection of all the means of verification, scanning and hand over to the education coordinator.
  • Collaboration in the production of any administrative document related to education activities implementation.
  • When needed, provide support for the use of any technology available in the refugee camp schools.
  • Liaise with data collectors and education coordinator for a correct and precise data collection in case of enrolment, assessments or other tasks needing data collection.
  • Represent JRS in meetings at camp level or with other stakeholders when assigned to do so by the education coordinator.
  • Perform other duties as reasonably assigned and mutually agreed upon with the Project Director.
  1. Profile sought :
  • Bachelor degree of Inclusive Education.
  • A minimum of 3 years’ professional experience in the field of inclusive education.
  • A minimum of 2 years’ professional experience in an NGO or international organization.
  • Experience working in refugee camps in Tanzania will be positively considered.
  • Good knowledge and experience with gender-responsive programming and child protection.
  • Experience in monitoring and evaluation.
  • Good knowledge of spoken and written English and Swahili.
  • Knowledge of French and Kirundi will be positively considered.
  • Good knowledge of common software (Word, Excel, Power Point).
  • Ability to work independently with initiative and collaboration with partners.
  • Ability to work in a team.
  • Adaptability and ability to handle pressure.
  • Patience and open-minded attitude.
  • Willingness to live Kigoma region (Kibondo or Kasulu).
  • Be available as soon as possible.
