The Belgian Red Cross is advocating for better respect for international humanitarian law. This mission is carried out by the Global Citizenship Education and International Humanitarian Law (ECM-DIH) Service, in conjunction with the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. This advocacy aims to encourage policy makers and opinion leaders to act permanently in the interest of vulnerable people, in full respect of fundamental humanitarian principles. It is expressed in particular through the following axes:
- bilateral and confidential dialogue with the Belgian authorities in order to strengthen Belgium’s respect for IHL at national and international level;
- strengthening the capacity of (future) professionals (military personnel, magistrates, lawyers, journalists, diplomats, students, etc.) to apply IHL in the exercise of their (future) profession, mainly through training and major events;
- strengthening the civic awareness of the population in Belgium , mainly young people, on the theme of respect for human dignity in times of war, through activities, calls for mobilization and awareness-raising activities.
Function :
Under the supervision of the Legal Advisor in International Humanitarian Law and Relations with the Movement , in close collaboration with the other members of the ECM-DIH team, your role as assistant for the dissemination of international humanitarian law consists of:
- Design and provide training in IHL for (future) professionals;
- Write articles and insights relating to IHL;
- Organize events of various sizes dedicated to IHL;
- Provide legal support in IHL to the teams of the International Department;
- Contribute to the drafting of discussion notes on IHL issues as part of the National Society’s advocacy activities;
- Carry out awareness -raising efforts on IHL among new audiences;
- Monitor activity indicators and contribute to evaluation processes .
Profile :
- You adhere to and share the 7 fundamental principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement;
- You hold a law degree and a complementary master’s degree in international law;
- You have two years of experience in a professional environment (internships, paid work, volunteering);
- You demonstrate a strong interest in international humanitarian law;
- You have a perfect command of French, you demonstrate ease in writing and summarizing and you also have a good level of English, both spoken and written. Practice of Dutch is an asset;
- You have a facility for public speaking;
- You have a good command of basic IT tools (Excel, Word, Outlook);
- You demonstrate good autonomy and initiative-taking skills, versatility, team spirit, interpersonal skills, adaptability and resistance to stress.
