The IRC has been operating in Thailand since 1975 and currently provides assistance to displaced persons in Tak, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi and Mae Hong Son provinces

Job Overview/Summary:

The Emergency Medical Referral (EMR) Translation Assistant is to assist the referral of patients from camp to Thai hospital and back.

Major Responsibilities:

1. Take care of patients:

  • Manage referrals according to IRC policy
  • Follow up of patients from arrival to Thai hospital and to their departure to the camp.
  • Register all patients upon arrival at Thai hospital for OPD, admit planned and an emergency -patients
  • Daily prepare the Patient list form and sent to Thai hospital
  • Record Daily summary of IPD patient and sent to Senior Medical Referral Officer once a week.
  • Daily patient planning
  • Record of hospital information in Lema book upon discharge
  • Daily inform KRC the number of companions of patient who admitted at Thai hospital
  • Daily request the number of lunch box for OPD patientsfrom camps and from Umphanghospital
  • In case of suspect infectious disease take preventive measures
  • In case of victim of SGBV treat according to IRC protocol
  • Check that referral documents, Lema and any other papers (laboratory etc) with which the patient arrives are correctly filled upon arrival and before departure to the camp (usually done by Thai doctor, if not EMR to fill necessary information)
  • Ensure that treatment prescribed from hospital is well transmitted to the patient and Senior Medical Referral Officer.

2. Take care and follow up of patients at Thai hospital:

  • Make an appointment with necessary specialist for a consultation
  • Organize transport to and from hospital for patients in coordination with IRC driver. And also transportation to and form Mae Tao Clinic for patients
  • In case of hospitalization arrange administrative formalities upon admission and discharge
  • Assist patients during consultation, follow up and hospitalization.
  • Request lunch box for OPD patients+ Caretaker from camps and from Umphang hospital
  • Distributed the Luch box for pts+ companion in OPD Mae Sot hospital
  • Visit daily hospitalized patients (In the practice the hospital requested and we can visit pts)
  • Be aware of the patient diagnose and follow all tests that are being administered by Thai doctors to inform Senior Medical Referral Officer and avoid too many tests or too long hospitalization.
  • Accompany one time a week Clinical Manager/ Senior Medical Referral Officer during hospital visit
  • In case of an unexpected medical development, inform the Senior Medical Referral Officer on time.
  • Act as a translator for patients/IRC doctors/hospital staff in Karen (Burmese)/Thai/English
  • Make sure the patient follows the treatment prescribed
  • Prepare documentation for pts planned to refer to others Thai hospital
  • Accompany patients in case of referral to others Thai hospital

3. Additional responsibilities:

  • Participate in weekly team meetings
  • Take night and weekend shifts according to planning done by Senior Medical Referral Officer
  • Respond to emergency situations, when necessary
  • Follow that Chiang Mai Patient House assets are in good condition
  • Notify Senior Medical Referral Officer in case of need of maintenance in the Chiang Mai Patient House or material supply
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned by supervisors and/or line manager.

Position Reports to: Senior Medical Referral Officer

Indirect Reporting: Senior Health Manager

Other Internal and/or external contacts:

Internal: Program staff, and Camp base staff
External: Thai Hospital

Job Requirements:

Education: Diploma or higher education. Nursing or other medical background is an advantage.

Work Experience: At least 1 year of relevant work experience in a similar position.

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies:

  • Experience in an NGO is preferred.
  • Ability to work in low-resource settings.
  • Strong coordination and communication skills
  • Team Player

Language Skills: Working knowledge of Thai, English, Karen and/or Burmese

Certificates or Licenses: n/a

Working Environment:

The position will be based in the IRC office in Mae Sot district, with frequent and regular travel to the refugee camps, and Thai hospital.
