Tostan is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization headquartered in Dakar, Senegal, and currently operating in five countries in West Africa. Strategically, the organization is committed to continuing to develop its core competency of educational empowerment and to documenting and scaling the sustainable impact it creates across a range of issues. Tostan’s flagship model, the three-year Community Empowerment Program (CEMP), has already impacted thousands of communities in West and East Africa since 1991. Outcomes in governance, education, health, economic empowerment, and the environment are currently being tracked, and Tostan is particularly proud to have played a significant role in the large-scale empowerment of women and girls and the community’s abandonment of harmful practices such as female genital mutilation and child marriage. As part of its 2023-2030 Strategic Engagement Plan , Tostan is focusing on strategic scaling. The organization is developing new implementation strategies to support community leadership in unlocking larger-scale systemic change at the regional level. Position Summary
The Data Analytics Officer will use data to develop solutions tailored to the unique needs of the organization. He/she will play a key role in maintaining and developing Tostan’s data visualization and workflow tools (e.g. dashboards). The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with Tableau, and will be a fluent or native French speaker. This role involves collaborating with the Tostan team to create interactive tools that provide valuable insights from data.
Roles and responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Head of Evaluation, Learning and Data Analytics, the Data Analysis Officer will be responsible for:
- Data Analytics: Analyzing data to derive meaningful insights and inform decision-making processes.
- Develop, design and maintain Tableau dashboards, reports and workflows to support decision making.
- Perform data extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) tasks to ensure data accuracy and availability.
- Analyze complex databases to identify trends, patterns and insights that can lead to program strategies.
- Collaboration: Work closely with SERA and other teams to create interactive tools (dashboards, etc.) that extract insights from data.
- Work closely with internal and external stakeholders to gather requirements and provide analytical support.
- Provide ongoing support and maintenance of existing dashboards, incorporating feedback and making necessary updates.
- Training and Support: Train and support team members to use data visualization tools and interpret data.
- Conduct training sessions and workshops to teach users how to interact with Tableau dashboards and leverage data.
- Reporting: Contribute to the preparation of detailed reports and presentations to communicate findings and recommendations to stakeholders.
- Design clear and visually compelling data visualizations to effectively communicate results.
- Collaborate with team members and stakeholders to understand their needs and translate them into visual reports.
- Ensure visualizations adhere to best practices in data visualization and storytelling.
- Documentation and Standards: Ensure general acceptance and sustainability through detailed documentation of standards and processes.
- Document the processes for designing, developing, and maintaining Tableau dashboards and data models.
- Establish and enforce best practices and standards for Tableau development and data visualization across the organization.
- Stay up-to-date with the latest Tableau features and industry trends to continuously improve analytics capabilities.
- Management :
- Manage a team member in their role supporting the creation and maintenance of dashboards and visualizations and managing data collection and data validation tools.

Location: Thiès, Senegal (preferred), Hybrid work possible (3 days in the office, 2 days remote), Remote work possible (remote with availability during GMT business hours)
Key qualifications required:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in data science, monitoring and evaluation, statistics, or a related field.
- Experience: At least 4-5 years of experience in data analysis, visualization and workflow management.
- Language proficiency: Fluent French or mother tongue.
- Technical skills: Advanced proficiency in Tableau (including Tableau Prep), Airtable and Excel.
- Collaboration: Ability to work effectively with a diverse team in a multicultural environment.
Language skills : Fluent French (oral and written) and a good level of English (oral and written) is required.
Desired qualifications:
- Technical skills : Proficiency in other tools such as SQL, R, Python and Power BI.
- Experience in non-profit organizations : Prior experience in a non-profit organization or international development organization.
- Additional languages : Fluency in Wolof or another West African language.
