INTRODUCTION

Natural Justice is an organisation rooted in the struggles of communities in Africa. As a team of pioneering lawyers and legal experts, we specialise in human rights and environmental law in the pursuit of social and environmental justice. Natural Justice strives to enhance the collective rights of people and protect the sacred relationships that indigenous peoples and local communities have with nature. Our work is informed by the values, knowledge and self-determination of the communities whom we stand in solidarity with. Through legal empowerment, research, policy influencing and litigation, and as part of coalitions and campaigns, we support communities to know the law, use the law and shape the law. Natural Justice has three main pillars: Affirming and Securing Rights to Lands, Resources and Knowledge; Defending Rights against Environmental and Social Impacts; and Standing with Communities.

BACKGROUND OF ACTIVITY

In order to effectively implement the strategic plan (2024-2028) and secure the long-term organization’s sustainability, the East Africa Hub of Natural Justice is seeking the services of a qualified consultant(s) to train its staff (16 pax), on fundraising and resource mobilization. This training should consider the current global donor landscape, identify new actors, explore new funding mechanisms, and outline a strategic approach to leveraging existing and new partnerships, as well as make recommendations on how to diversify our resource base. The consultant should be able to provide the Hub with strategic approaches given the changing philanthropy environment and key opportunities for fundraising on environmental justice issues.

KEY OBJECTIVE

The primary objective of this consultancy is to deliver a bespoke, strategic training programme on fundraising for environmental and climate justice issues. This training will equip Natural Justice’s East Africa Hub staff with the tools, techniques, and understanding necessary to effectively raise funds for the organization’s work, focusing on:

  • Climate justice
  • Environmental rights advocacy
  • Legal empowerment and strategic litigation
  • Community-centered initiatives

The training will also explore best practices in donor engagement, proposal writing, relationship building, long-term sustainability strategies and strategic fundraising for not-for-profit organizations operating in the environmental and climate justice sectors in East Africa.

SCOPE OF WORK

The consultant will be responsible for designing and delivering a one-day long comprehensive, strategic fundraising training programme, which includes the following components:

  1. Mapping results from the bigger picture – The Strategic Plan and funding model to better understand the needs and help position the organisation for resource mobilization
  2. Conduct a comprehensive analysis of potential donors worldwide based on geographic interest and thematic funding and assess the feasibility of securing thematic funding.
  3. Identify funding gaps.
  4. Map donors’ strategic areas of interest and explore opportunities for partnerships from emerging donors
  5. Develop a plan to engage new donors.
  6. Recommend strategies to develop and maintain strategic partnerships and engagement with key donors.

i. Needs Assessment and Curriculum Design

  • Conduct a needs assessment through consultations with senior staff to understand the specific fundraising challenges and opportunities within the organization.
  • Develop a customized curriculum that aligns with the organization’s goals and needs, ensuring it is tailored to the specific fundraising realities of environmental and climate justice issues in East Africa.

ii. Delivery of Training

  • Deliver a one-day long training for staff, including the following topics:
    • Overview of fundraising for environmental and climate justice organizations
    • Identifying and understanding different donor types (e.g., government grants, foundations, individual donors, corporate social responsibility programs)
    • Fundraising strategies for environmental and climate justice (including community-driven approaches, advocacy-focused fundraising, etc.)
    • Proposal writing: crafting compelling narratives, budgeting, and aligning fundraising requests with donor priorities
    • Engaging and building relationships with donors, including networking, stewardship, and cultivating long-term support
    • Fundraising in the context of East Africa: regional challenges, opportunities, and strategies
    • Effective use of digital platforms and social media for fundraising
    • Developing a sustainable fundraising plan for the organization

DELIVERABLES

  1. Deliver inception report with the tools, methodology, approaches, and the workplan for the training.
  2. A report of a thorough assessment of the fundraising and resource mobilization priorities, needs, and gaps.
  3. Deliver final program for the training after discussion with the team.
  4. Develop training materials in consultation with the technical team.
  5. Deliver fundraising and resource mobilization training.
  6. Provide comprehensive training report.
  7. Develop clear fundraising and resource plans during and post the training

EXPECTED OUTCOMES OF THE TRAINING

The consultancy is expected to deliver several key outcomes that will directly contribute to enhancing the fundraising capacity of the East Africa Hub. These outcomes will ensure that staff are equipped with the skills and knowledge to secure sustainable funding for the organization’s work on environmental and climate justice. Below are the expected outcomes:

  1. Increased fundraising knowledge and skills.
  2. In the long term, contribute to the development of a clear, actionable, and sustainable fundraising plan that outlines short-term and long-term fundraising goals and strategies.
  3. Improved digital and social media fundraising capacity.
  4. Increased confidence in fundraising practices.
  5. Increased capacity for donor engagement and stewardship.
  6. Improved ability to develop clear monitoring and evaluation framework for fundraising success.

QUALIFICATIONS OF THE CONSULTANT

Interested individual(s) or consultancy firm (s) should possess the following minimum qualifications:

  1. Proven experience in fundraising for environmental and climate justice organisations preferably in East Africa.
  2. Minimum of 3 years’ experience in managing/offering related services to institutions.
  3. Experience designing and delivering bespoke training programs for non-profit organizations, especially in fundraising and resource mobilization.
  4. Strong knowledge of the donor landscape (local, regional, international) and fundraising opportunities specific to East Africa.
  5. Good knowledge of NGO operations.
  6. Ability to establish priorities, plan, coordinate, and monitor own work.
  7. Excellent interpersonal, facilitation and communication skills, and ability to work in a consultative and collaborative manner.

TIMEFRAME AND VENUE

  • Venue: The venue will be in Kenya, at the coastal region. Specific location venue to be provided later. Transport and accommodation outside Nairobi will be provided by Natural Justice
  • Time Frame: The entire exercise should be completed within 21 days of signing the contract. The training date is tentatively, 3rd December 2024.

PAYMENT

Payment shall be made on attaining the following milestones and deliverables; 25% upon submission of a summary of the training content, 50% upon completion of the training delivery and 25% upon submission of a report on the assignment.

Invitations to bid or requests for proposals will be issued in accordance with Natural Justice’s policies and procedures. Natural Justice reserves the right to change, cancel the requirements and the right to require compliance with additional conditions at any time during the EOI process.
