Background
The International Development Corporation, a Research & Development organization headquartered in Quebec City, Canada, is seeking a Senior Regional Research Manager for its projects in Africa. The Senior Regional Research Manager will work closely with the President and CEO, managing a team of research assistants and conducting data analysis for its research portfolio in development economics, public finance and impact assessment.
The role requires a minimum commitment of 2 years, with the possibility of a longer term extension. The successful candidate will be based in Bamako, Mali with regular assignments to other countries in Africa.
Job Description
This position combines research and management functions, and is ideal for someone who enjoys working independently and taking on multiple responsibilities simultaneously. The Senior Regional Research Manager will be involved in all stages of the research – brainstorming, literature review, survey design, data analysis in Stata, data processing, data visualization and report writing. Management activities include liaising with funders and collaborators, organizing events, writing reports, task planning, overseeing project finances, supporting and managing a team of 5-10 research assistants.
Specifically, the Senior Regional Research Manager will be responsible for:
- Supervise and coach research staff (Research Assistant, Supervisors) in the implementation of complex research projects by applying the high standards established by SDI;
- Represent the office and the team at important meetings with partners;
- Manage close relationships with investigators from multiple research institutions, funders and implementing partners to ensure project success;
- Ensure the programming of survey questionnaires in SurveyCTO and Survey Solution, and develop high quality data quality control systems, advanced statistical analyses and technical reports;
- In collaboration with the Country Directors and the CEO, identify and develop potential projects with significant research and policy implications;
- Oversee survey implementation, data quality assurance, data cleaning, data analysis and other activities related to the implementation of a rigorous impact evaluation;
- Produce and ensure that project deliverables, such as reports and financial statements, are submitted to donors and partners on time;
- Lead training on data management and general project management for research staff of new and upcoming projects;
- Promote inter-project best practices and take the initiative to share best practices with projects through formal and informal training opportunities;
- Serve as the point of contact for data management and analysis support for project staff by serving as a liaison between projects and SDI headquarters;
- Upon request, support the dissemination of results through presentations and reports intended for academic and non-academic audiences;
- Carried out any other technical tasks assigned to him
Candidate profile
- Have a master’s or doctorate in Statistics, Economics, Agroeconomics, Demography or related fields
- At least 10 years of experience in coordinating quantitative data collection in Africa
- Have a minimum of 5 years in writing research proposals
- Good knowledge of qualitative research methodology
- Good CAPI questionnaire programming skills (especially Survey Solutions and SurveyCTO)
- Ability to train, evaluate and supervise interviewers and focus group facilitators
- Good knowledge of MS Office applications
- Strong knowledge of Stata , experience working with coding and data analysis, with strong attention to detail to ensure results are error-free and meet high academic standards.
- Excellent organizational skills to meet deadlines, respond to multiple simultaneous requests and ensure documentation and tasks are organized for all projects.
- Familiarity or interest in research and evaluation in West Africa.
- Prior professional experience as a research assistant or research director in the field of impact evaluation or empirical economics is an asset.
- Be able to communicate effectively in writing and orally in French
- Knowledge of English would be an asset
Contract conditions
The initial duration of the contract will be 2 years with a trial period of 6 months. The start date of the contract is set for January 2, 2025. The gross monthly salary will be 2,000,000 FCFA.
