WHO WE ARE
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.
THE PURPOSE
Under the direct supervision of Admin/Logistics Assistant, The Light Vehicles Driver transports people, and goods in a safe and timely manner, in accordance with ICRC rules and regulations and national traffic laws.
YOUR ROLE
- Drives light vehicles to transport people and/or material in strict adherence to internal security rules and national traffic laws.
- Ensures that goods are stored inside the vehicle according to local, international and ICRC safety standards (attachment and distribution of goods, etc.).
- Checks their assigned vehicle(s)’ equipment, general functioning and body condition and ensures that it is kept fueled and clean inside and out.
- Checks that trips have been authorized where necessary.
- Immediately reports accidents, defects and/or missing equipment to management.
- Can act as head of field trip as needed (in charge of the driver(s), application of security rules and timeframe for the field trip).
- Ensures that risks are mitigated by performing the controls assigned to his/her role as described in the Logistics Risk and Control Matrix
- Strict adherence to safety and security internal rules and national traffic laws
- Drives carefully to avoid damage or loss to cargo and assists with loading and offloading of personal effects.
- Handles shipping documents (Waybills, etc.) with utmost care and according to procedures.
- Operates HF and VHF radio communication equipment according to the ICRC procedures.
- Performs weekend or public holiday standby duties when required.
- Ensures that odometer control, check lists and other mandatory forms are correctly filled out and forwarded to Dispatcher and others related to fleet management each time a vehicle is assigned.
- Acts as an interpreter whenever necessary and maintain good personal hygiene and neat dressing habits.
YOUR PROFILE: EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Secondary School/ Diploma.
- Driving license B (BE, B1) held for at least five years.
- Knowledge (spoken and written) of English, and the local language (Hausa) – a Must
- 3-4 years’ experience in a similar position
- Automobile maintenance experience (oil checks, changing tyres, etc.).
- Basic knowledge of mechanics.
- Must possess an in-depth understanding of Kano State’s transportation infrastructure.
- Experience in navigating both urban and rural areas of Kano State
- Extensive knowledge of the geography and road networks of Kano and Northern States is required.
- Applicant must have a valid working permit to work in Nigeria.
