About the Regional Director- Africa role.

To provide strategic leadership, and oversee strategic planning, programmatic direction and growth, and all programs and operations within Africa, including overall guidance to a multinational staff, to support and strengthen a strong climate movement in the regions stopping fossil fuel expansion and accelerating a just transition to solutions, specially renewable energy for all.

To direct and oversee the development, prioritisation, integration, and implementation of regional strategies, including campaigning, organising, and mobilising as part of the global effort to stop the climate crisis.

To engage with other regional and global leadership to shape, develop and implement campaigning, organising, and mobilising strategies as well as organisation-wide structures and processes, ensuring that local and regional needs are reflected.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Regional strategies

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership and ensure the development and implementation of effective regional strategies in the context of 350’s global vision, mission, and goals.
  • Strategic engagement of key leaders on relevant substantive issues on climate justice across the continent
  • Oversee, drive and support identified campaigns for 350 in the region, under the pillars of the organization’s ‘strategic steer’ with clear deliverables
  • Identify and create synergies with emerging opportunities that could advance global or regional goals
  • Establish performance measures, monitor results, and support the Department Head of Regions to evaluate the effectiveness of the regional program
  • Identify risks to our regional program and ensure the development of mitigation plans
  • Oversee and guide as appropriate team response to reactive opportunities or flashpoint campaigns in the regions.
  • Build and maintain relationships with a regional network of partners/allies, including engaging them in priority work areas for 350.
  • Oversee our work’s effective communication (traditional and digital) across the region.
  • Oversee the planning and implementation of training, artivism, and research as strategic to the regional campaigns.
  • Works closely with the relevant affiliates involved within the Region in a number of different ways to ensure the good relationships are maintained in order to develop and deliver Regional Programs.
  • Ensure where appropriate that regional campaigns can be articulated in local languages, in liaison with 350’s Translations Programme.

Contribution to our global work

  • Be a proactive and collaborative member of the wider Global Strategy Council (GSC)
  • Provide African perspectives and contributions to global strategies, campaigns and processes
  • Actively engage in and inform the global organisational change process and lead the regional teams effectively and sustainably through changes that are impacting them directly or indirectly
  • Identify and seize opportunities for work in the region to contribute to cross-regional and global campaigns; oversee regional involvement in those efforts
  • Attend key international movement gatherings
  • Ensure effective work relationships between the African regional team, country-based teams, and other regions / global departments and structures

Public Engagement and representation

  • Provide thought leadership in the region on relevant topics through public speaking, regular writing, and media appearances
  • Represent 350.org at political meetings; to funders, partners, the media, and the wider public at large
  • Maintain and expand regional partnerships within the region
  • Collaborate with external partners and funders, including conceiving and convening meetings, coalition calls, and negotiating longer-term partnerships around key pieces of our campaign work
  • Identify funding opportunities and potential new funders

Staff management

  • Manage staff and consultants in the team, including performance appraisal of staff members across the region
  • Provide direct line-management support to senior staff members, including Regional Managers
  • Support a healthy culture of collaborative, solutions-oriented teams and individuals
  • Promote and model a positive sustainable working culture in the team that aligns with 350. org’s values and that provides a healthy work environment for all staff
  • Plan and facilitate in-person and virtual team meetings.

Resource Management

  • Monitor and manage the regional budget and finances to ensure high standards of accountability and reporting by tracking the spending every month, and identifying any changes or adjustments needed,
  • Oversee the development and monitoring of the regional budgets and finances.
  • Responsible for supporting all fundraising efforts including writing of proposals, donor engagement and reporting.
  • Ensure 350.org complies with laws and regulations in countries where it maintains direct operational presence and leads efforts to register in new locations as operations require.
  • Ensure safety and security protocols are adopted as required; support registration process as required.
  • In collaboration with our Development and Finance Teams, oversee and support first-class funding proposals, grant management, dialogue, and reporting for funders; develop new donor contacts and oversee fundraising initiatives for 350.org in the regions.

Other

  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies and procedures as well as applicable laws governing operational matters
  • Understand 350.org’s history, campaigns, and theory of social change, and keep current with basic climate science and policy. From time to time, use this knowledge to represent 350.org’s perspective in varied public venues based on geographic location and areas of expertise.
  • From time to time, contribute work towards 350. org’s overall mission that is outside of standard responsibilities and instead relies solely on geographic location or work capacity.

Required Qualifications

  • At least 5-7 years of relevant leadership and management work experience as a senior manager on the continent implementing social justice campaigns for change with civil society and grassroots actors
  • A strong leader; well developed soft influencing skills and a true ‘listener’ to diverse perspectives with experience in leading complex and remote teams,
  • Proven ability to identify strong campaigning and movement-building opportunities and build creative connections between geographic struggles. global collaborations, and delivering campaign strategies in a regional context
  • Experience of working within African contexts; an understanding of the opportunities and challenges that brings.
  • Experience in leading and coordinating regional, remotely based staff around the continent
  • Working knowledge of and keen interest in the current global debates on climate change, renewable energy, and climate justice
  • Experience in managing campaigns, projects as well as coordinating multiple teams and stakeholders with global collaborations, and delivering campaign strategies in a regional context
  • Experience working in an international setting, across countries, regions, and cultures, in a distributed, multicultural team, where work happens online and across different time zones.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.

Desired skills and experiences

  • Excellent written and spoken French (strong advantage)
  • Strong working knowledge of traditional and social media
  • Experience working remotely, ideally in an international context
  • Experience working in a non-governmental organisation or the non-profit sector
  • Experience and competency working in multicultural groups

We are looking for someone who is comfortable working both independently and in teams, highly responsive, and able to lead initiatives as well as take direction from others.

Position Type: Full time- 36 hours per week

Location: Remote with some flexibility. Preferred locations where 350.org currently operates in Africa are: Kenya, Senegal, and South Africa.

Annual gross salary: 350.org has set salaries for all levels and does not negotiate compensation. Tier 4.2: Kenya – KES 6,353,581, Senegal – XOF 29,099,611, South Africa – ZAR 1,092,523
