CARE works in a variety of contexts from protracted crises to stable development settings, as well as contexts in the nexus between these two types, and recognizes that the underlying drivers of food and nutrition insecurity are poverty, gender inequity, non-inclusive governance, poor adaptation to climate change and the inability to manage other economic and political shocks and stressors. To address these underlying drivers of poverty, the CARE Food and Water Systems (FWS) Global Team has developed CARE’s Right to Food Water and Nutrition Strategy (2030). Through this strategy, CARE will ensure that 75 million people fulfil their right to food water and nutrition. To achieve this CARE will be building on the “She Feeds the World” (SFtW) framework, which underlies all of CARE’s food and nutrition security (FNS) programming. The SFtW framework leverages CARE’s experience and tools to bring about access to productive assets and resources to women and vulnerable groups, build capacities to improve their productivity, increase incomes through agriculture and other livelihoods, reducing food loss and waste, increase the awareness of the negative impacts of climate change and how to mitigate them, increase access to critical nutrients and the adoption of effective behaviors to reduce malnutrition, ensure healthy lives for all members of society, and increase the capacity of women, men, boys and girls to adapt to and absorb shocks and stressors to effectively sustain their FNS.
The Agriculture and Market Systems Team ( A&M) spearheads the FWS global efforts to improve women’s livelihoods through addressing access to productive assets and resources, increasing access to inclusive markets and reducing food loss and waste. The A&M seeks to achieve this by developing and supporting interventions that increase agricultural productivity and effective linkages to markets. Agriculture and Markets are seen as credible pathways to increase womens income and livelihoods. In most Countries where CARE works, farmers particularly women face significant challenges to increasing their productivity and engaging effectively with market. They lack access to productive assets and resources, including finance, agricultural inputs and land. Women and other small scale producers also face significant challenges engaging with market given their limited experience and knowledge of the market systems.
