Major Gifts Officer, Western Region At HIAS

POSITION SUMMARY:

HIAS seeks a Major Gifts Officer, Western Region to assist with planning, coordinating and designing strategies for cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of individuals in the Western Region making $1,000+ gifts. This role will report to the Associate Director, Major Gifts and will join a team of remote colleagues spread over several states. This individual is responsible for meeting an annual revenue target by working with an assigned portfolio of donors and prospects to advance the mission of the organization. Beyond the Major Gifts team, this role will work closely with a wide variety of internal stakeholders, both within the Development department and outside of it.

Note, we ask that candidates be based in the Bay Area, and we are willing to consider candidates based in Los Angeles as well. This is a remote position, with significant travel responsibilities to meet with donors and travel on behalf of HIAS.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Sets annual $1,000+ giving goals and assists in identifying opportunities and strategies for achieving new and increased gifts, with the direction of the Associate Director, Major Gifts.
  • Conducts a significant number of qualified contacts per month with donors or prospects to strengthen donor relationships for long-term support.
  • Works collaboratively with Community Engagement, Communications, Advocacy and Programs teams on advancement strategies.
  • Partners with colleagues on Institutional Development and Development Operations teams, as well as colleagues in the Public Affairs division as a whole, to align solicitation strategies with the interests of specific donors or prospects.
  • Works with the Major Gifts leadership team to develop and execute ongoing strategies for qualifying prospects and moving them to donor status using tools such as small cultivation events (both in person and virtual), community networking and one-on-one meetings.
  • Oversees timely and meaningful donor acknowledgment and stewardship initiatives.
  • Maintains detailed records in HIAS’ database.
  • Maintains ongoing familiarity with refugee issues, Jewish communal philanthropic opportunities and trends.
  • Assists in other Public Affairs projects, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Undergraduate degree required.
  • 3-5 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Experience in researching and identifying major new funding prospects; progressive experience in successful advancement or related programs.
  • Comfort with high-net-worth individuals and families.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to write clearly to external and internal stakeholders; comfort with speaking to small groups and ability to modulate tone depending on audience. Able to listen actively and respond to donor needs.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills; ability to prioritize, manage time efficiently in a fast-paced work environment, and remain flexible in an ever-changing landscape for refugee issues.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in fundraising principles and methodologies.
  • Strong personal connection to refugee issues and/or the Jewish community is a plus.
  • Comfort in representing HIAS to funders and interacting with a diverse base of supporters.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite, fundraising databases (Raiser’s Edge preferred) and prospect research tools.
  • Ability to work with a high degree of autonomy and accountability while being a team player.
  • Willingness to travel throughout the Western Region (about 30% time) and ability to attend functions/activities outside of normal work hours.
