2215 – DEPUTY EDITOR, CENTER FOR INTERNATIONAL MEDIA ASSISTANCE (CIMA)

The National Endowment for Democracy (NED), a federally funded, private, nonprofit grantmaking organization that works to support freedom around the world, seeks a Deputy Editor for the Center for International Media Assistance (CIMA). The position is based in Washington, D.C.

Position Summary:

Reporting to CIMA’s Associate Director and Editor, the Deputy Editor is responsible for several components of CIMA’s research and publications program, including ensuring adherence to CIMA’s editorial standards, supporting the development of research ideas, coordinating publications efforts, and working with writers across the globe.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist Associate Director/Editor in the execution of CIMA’s research agenda and publications pipeline, including the coordination of a publication’s workflow and calendar.
  • Edit selected reports or other publications for content, style, grammar, and clarity, resulting in fluently written, logically coherent, and factually correct articles that will appeal to the general reader, scholars, specialists, and media development practitioners.
  • Conduct fact-checking and research background information as necessary to ensure accuracy and accessibility of reports.
  • Build a repository of data sources that can be used for fact-checking and integrating data and statistics into CIMA publications.
  • Communicate with report authors as required to resolve content and editorial questions expectations and ensure quality work and adherence to CIMA’s style guide and editorial policies.
  • Support Associate Director/Editor and members of CIMA’s other work areas to develop and evaluate report ideas and identify authors.
  • Liaise with Assistant Editor and copy editors to support last-mile publishing efforts, including digital uploading and formatting, design and layout of publications, integration of charts and infographics.
  • Write and edit briefings, executive summaries, and email releases based upon full-length reports as required.
  • Attend relevant internal and external meetings, conferences, and events.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge/Experience (formal degree requirements and years of relevant job experience required):
  • Graduate degree preferred; bachelor’s degree required
  • 4+ years of relevant experience in a similar editorial role, with preference for candidates who have worked on multiple styles of publications, including books, policy briefings, reports, scholarly publications, website content, and news articles
  • Knowledge of issues related to global independent news media and democracy promotion programs preferred
  • Experience in international media development, governance and accountability, or international development sectors highly desired
  • Other Qualifications:
  • Experience in editing and publishing,
  • Familiarity with editorial policies and workflow processes
  • Knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style
  • Experience managing websites (WordPress preferred) both on the operations side and in thinking strategically about SEO, taxonomy, and user experience
  • Attention to detail, and high degree of organization and initiative
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience living and working overseas is an asset
  • Proficiency in a second language is an asset
  • Authorized to work in the US

This position is part of the NED Bargaining Unit.
