This is an exciting internship opportunity for a highly motivated, entrepreneurial candidate with a passion for climate action and social entrepreneurship. You will join a dynamic team within an international NGO in Nairobi and learn to communicate effectively with a range of partners and stakeholders, both at the national and global level. You will have the opportunity to develop your skills in event management, project management, communications, and creativity and gain invaluable experience to propel you forward in your career.

I. Main Objective:

The 3ZERO House, a global initiative led by Acted NGO, is a collaborative space that aims to facilitate and accelerate local partnerships, innovations, and solutions dedicated to achieving a 3ZERO world. This world is characterized by Zero Carbon emissions, Zero Exclusion, and Zero Poverty.

The hub provides a place for various local stakeholders such as private sector (small, medium businesses), civil society organisations, citizens, and institutions to meet regularly and work together to resolve environmental, humanitarian and poverty challenges. It aims to accelerate and scale-up innovative and entrepreneurial solutions to these challenges – incubating social and circular enterprises as well as NGO initiatives. Website: www.3zero.org

The 3ZERO House in Nairobi will be an event, training, social and co-work space that actors across sectors can use as a platform for collaboration and innovation. It aims to:

  • Fertilise partnerships & collaboration between diverse stakeholders through a co-working space; workshops; competitions; hackathons; networking events; presentations; and debates.
  • Catalyse & unlock the potential of youth, entrepreneurs and civil society through community-led, demand-led training, mentoring and coaching opportunities.
  • Accelerate promising & innovative business, social and environmental initiatives through small grants and specialised incubation or acceleration services, and exposure to investment opportunities.

The 3ZERO House (3ZH) Intern will assist the Coordination and Project Development/Communications Unit to identify, develop and design 3ZERO House events and initiatives in Kenya. The 3ZH Intern conducts rigorous research on green and environmental initiatives, designs communication materials, and assists in the logistics of events planning and execution. She/he helps to prepare social media and marketing materials and to manage the day-to-day running of the 3ZERO House space.

II. Responsibilities:

Research and analysis

  • Market research and analysis of climate change, waste management, biodiversity and other relevant issues in Kenya
  • Mapping of actors and potential partnerships
  • Produce fact- and data-driven social media posts and written materials

    Event management

  • Assist with the preparation of ideas and concept notes for events
  • Prepare event planning tables and keep track of progress and deadlines
  • Support with the event planning and preparation processes
  • Support with pre-, during- and post-event communications e.g. social media and blog posts

Communications

  • Contribute to generating ideas for the social media calendar and content plan,
  • Under the guidance of the Communications & Advocacy Officer, contribute to generating high-quality content for the social media pages,
  • Assist with collecting photos, facts, and information for reports and blog pieces

    Internal & External Coordination

  • Assist with setting up and coordinating internal and external meetings
  • Support with meeting preparation e.g. by doing research and producing short briefing documents, preparing factsheets etc.
  • Document meetings by taking minutes and filing/sharing appropriately

    Fundraising

  • Contribute to proposal development through research, editing and generating new ideas.

    Protection mainstreaming

  • Promoting of and adhering to Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse policy and guidelines (for site residents, Acted staff, partner agencies, casual labours etc).
  • Perform any other related activities as assigned by the line manager.

III. Required qualifications and technical competencies:

Acted seeks a highly motivated, entrepreneurial and passionate intern to assist and support with the development of the exciting 3ZERO House initiative. The ideal candidate will have:

  • At least a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies, climate change, sustainable development, communications and marketing, business administration, social enterprise or related field – a Master’s degree is an advantage.
  • Fluent English (written and spoken), excellent writing and communication skills
  • Passionate interest in climate change and environmental issues
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and basic understanding of business and finance sectors
  • Good IT skills, proficient in Microsoft office – basic graphic design abilities are an advantage
  • Experience (e.g. through student groups, extracurricular activities):
    1. developing partnerships with various stakeholders,
    2. planning and managing events, and
    3. working with diverse teams
