Background:

The American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) was established in 1990 as a public service project of the ABA to promote the rule of law around the world and has implemented legal reform programs in more than 100 countries. Together with local partners in the public and private sectors, as well as civil society organizations, ABA ROLI designs programs that are responsive to local needs and that prioritize sustainable solutions to pressing rule of law challenges.

The Human Rights for All (HRA) Project, working in close alliance with civil society organizations, government entities, and other stakeholders, aims to strengthen the Guatemalan human rights system so that all citizens are respected and protected. Through advocacy, education, awareness-raising, and capacity building, the project will promote a culture of respect for human rights to foster the further development of Guatemala. The goal of the HRA project is to strengthen Guatemala’s human rights system.

Job Description:

The Assistant Field Financial Manager – Finance (AFFM) works with ABA program teams in Guatemala and DC to support the activity implementation of the HRA program. The AFFM will be primarily responsible for coordinating financial and administrative support to carry out all technical or programmatic activities of the Project.

Location:

This position will be based in Guatemala City, Guatemala.

Responsibilities:

  • Participates in the coordination of logistics and administrative assistance to carry out programmatic activities and day-to-day office operations;
  • Maintains and updates the official office calendar and contact list, staff vacations;
  • Performs all accounting assistant duties including, but not limited to, physical and digital collection and organization of invoices and receipts, bank documents, transcription of expense, payment and investment data into the accounting system(s) or software operated by ABA ROLI.
  • Petty cash management;
  • Manages daily all matters related to office operations; e.g. supplies (stationery and other desk supplies), vendor relations (consumables, telephone and internet);
  • Prepares and submits expense reports for travel (and other types), supports in the design and control of financial reports related to program activities;
  • Supports the review of subgrantees’ financial reports;
  • Organizes financial information and presents it to the Financial Manager;
  • Support expense projections for all program activities;
  • Requests and maintains contract tracking and coordinates with the Local Financial Manager if modifications are required;
  • Support the completion of program financial reports;
  • Assist the Chief of Party and Deputy Chief of Party in preparing and reporting travel (and other) expenses;
  • Supports in coordinating logistics for training workshops in Guatemala;
  • Completes all activities related to the position, as well as those indicated by the Field Financial manager, Chief of Party, Deputy Chief of Party, Program Director, Regional Director, and ABA ROLI HQ.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, administration, economics, or other relevant field.
  • At least three years of work experience in accounting and administration of private organizations.
  • Minimum of 1 year of supervisory work experience, including direct supervision of professional and support staff.
  • Fluency in Spanish; proficiency in English (writing, reading, and conversation).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel and Word)
  • Ability to work in a team.
  • Knowledge and experience in the preparation of tax returns and tax declarations. Handling of SUNAT virtual tools.
  • Knowledge and experience in preparing financial statements.
  • Experience in managing accounting systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience within an international NGO or multilateral institution working with US government-funded projects, including familiarity with ADR and 2 CFR 200.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform administrative and logistical tasks, follow procedures, and comply with regulatory requirements.
  • Familiarity with human rights protection and access to justice-related issues in Guatemala.
