Overview of position:
The engineering section for our client is mandated to carry out design, construction & maintenance of accommodation & office facilities for civilian staff & T / PCC’s. The engineering section has the following units:
- WATSAN.
- Projects & asset management unit.
- Infrastructure management unit.
- Planning & design unit.
Role objectives:
The Architect is responsible for large & challenging engineering projects, applying a full range of engineering theories & techniques in the design, construction, maintenance, repair & liquidation of major structures, facilities & related engineering activities required for peacekeeping field missions. The tasks include:
- Analyzes, plans & designs, prepares technical drawings for construction & maintenance of major systems & facilities such as buildings roads, bridges, airfields, helipads, railways, docks, waste disposal systems, flood control systems, water treatment facilities, related structures & other engineering activities in the field needed for the logistics support of peacekeeping & UN field missions. Should have knowledge of engineering standards.
- Prepares technical documents to include specification of works & BOQ’s.
- Evaluates, reviews, revises project documents & analyzes design specifications included in project proposals for accuracy, soundness, feasibility & cost.
- Recommends solutions to engineering problems. Conducts technical studies on engineering topics, developing guidelines for the general planning & maintenance of programs & facilities. Makes recommendations for resolution of problems in specialized areas.
- Calculates stresses & strain affecting proposed structures, considering such factors as estimated load, water pressure, wind resistance, soil characteristics, temperature fluctuations & nature of building materials to be used.
- Leads efforts of team studying critical problems relating to design or construction of systems and facilities. Participates in planning missions, serving as the Technical Adviser to committees.
- Develop short & long range plans for the design, procurement of goods / services, construction / commissioning & operation / maintenance of our clients facilities & infrastructure, taking into consideration that the mission is established in areas with a risk environment of medium to high threat & in areas with minimal power, communications, transport & service infrastructure.
- Mission facilities typically include modularized camps for troops & civilian staff, logistics bases & airbases with all required utility infrastructure for electrical, mechanical & plumbing systems & security works.
- Contribute to the development of annual engineering budgets & associated work schedules, based on engineering resource planning, taking into account all required engineering material needs & selected enabling capacities (e.g. military engineering units, commercial contractors, mission support teams, or mission engineering staffing) for the most effective & efficient execution of the engineering work plans.
- Monitor actual costs & schedule performance against the approved budget & baseline schedules.
- Attend & participate in design or preconstruction conference & other meetings with clients as necessary to establish design parameters.
- Conduct onsite meetings to assist in clarifying technical design elements as required.
Objectives:
- A list of projects that requires preparation of design by the Architect will be shared.
Outputs:
- Provides expert analysis of problems, advises on design & construction, leading to timely completion of project documentation in accordance with specifications & quality standards, significantly contributes to the training & preparation of engineering staff to meet future needs of the organization & mission.
- Proper coordination of all project management in all regions during the execution of construction projects.
Project reporting:
Work implies frequent interaction with the following:
- Chief Administrative Officer.
- Head of Logistics.
- Other service delivery units.
- Unit military staff.
- Civilian contractors.
- Counterparts in govt. & other UN and specialized agencies.
Key competencies:
- Advanced university degree (Master’s Degree or equivalent) in Architecture or Civil Engineering, a first level university degree (Bachelors Degree or equivalent) in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
- Experience in managing an engineering office comprised of different engineering specialties such as construction, facilities management, electromechanical.
- Experience translating client’s concept project proposals to final designs & advice on engineering procurements needs.
- A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in Architecture or related area.
- Qualifying years of experience are calculated following the receipt of the first level university degree recognized by the UN.
Team management:
- This role has no team management responsibility.
