Assistent Medical Coordinator At Stichting Bootvluchteling

Boat Refugee Foundation provides medical and psychological (emergency) help and stands up for the rights of people on the run. Where systems become inhumane and compassion is lost, we spring into action.

Since 2015, we have been committed to various locations on the edges of Europe. We are currently active in the Mavrovouni camp on Lesvos, where approximately 6,000 people are living in degrading conditions. Here, our teams, largely powered by volunteers, provide emergency relief seven days a week.

In this position you support our Medical Coordinator in his / her duties. Your main task is to manage the pharmacy, for which you are fully responsible. In addition, you organize simulation training for the medical team, you perform administrative tasks and you run a number of shifts per week as a shift coordinator in our mobile clinic. In this way you help to make our medical mission run as smoothly as possible.
Important! This position can also be filled by someone who lives and works in Greece (or in another EU country). In that case, the deployment will take place on a self-employed basis. Someone who lives and works in the Netherlands is employed by us on the basis of a fixed-term employment contract.

What do we ask of you?

  • You are a doctor or nurse (minimum Bachelor degree) with at least 2 years of relevant work experience;
  • We prefer specialization as a general practitioner, tropical doctor, pediatrician, psychiatrist / psychiatric nurse or experience / specialization in emergency care;
  • You have experience with medical work abroad, where experience in Greek healthcare is an absolute advantage;
  • In addition to the Dutch or Greek language, you are also fluent in the English language (spoken and written);
  • You have experience with coordinating and administrative work;
  • You communicate clearly and are socially strong;
  • You like to work in a team and you can deal well with changing working hours;
  • You enjoy standing in front of a group;
  • You can independently lead (smaller) projects and chair meetings;
  • You are good at Word and Excel and have experience with Google Drive;
  • You are in possession of a driving license B;
  • You are preferably available for 6 months.

It is an advantage if you have previously done voluntary work for the Boat Refugee Foundation.

What are you going to do?

  • You are responsible for our pharmacy. You process all incoming orders and donations, you manage the stock and, in consultation, also the budget for this. You keep the pharmacy neat and orderly, so that everyone can find the necessary items for the medical shifts and in consultation with our medical advisor, you keep the list of required medication.
  • You ensure that volunteers also take on additional tasks in addition to medical shifts. You organize and coordinate the so-called “task days” together with the Volunteer Coordinator.
  • You answer emails, often with questions about the pharmacy or donations, and you manage the related folders function on Google Drive.
  • Weekly you run two to three medical services in the clinic in the camp.
  • You act as a stable factor in the often rapidly changing team.
  • You think about and contribute to the optimization of the work of the medical team.
  • In the absence of the medical coordinator, for example during vacation, you take over a number of tasks.

What do we offer you?
As an Assistant medical coordinator you will receive a modest salary, in line with the character and objective of our organization. In addition, your travel costs (with a maximum of 500 euros) and accommodation (in our volunteer house) will be reimbursed.

Initially, you will be given a temporary contract for seven months. An extension after this period is possible, with a maximum commitment of twelve months in total.

You will be working in the Mavrovouni camp on Lesvos. There is a chance that you will be employed during your contract period within our newly started mission elsewhere in Greece. This is of course done in mutual consultation.
