The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to our mission of saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low-and middle-income countries. We work at the invitation of governments to support them and the private sector to create and sustain high-quality health systems.
CHAI was founded in 2002 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic with the goal of dramatically reducing the price of life-saving drugs and increasing access to these medicines in the countries with the highest burden of the disease. Over the following two decades, CHAI has expanded its focus. Today, along with HIV, we work in conjunction with our partners to prevent and treat infectious diseases such as COVID-19, malaria, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. Our work has also expanded into cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases, and we work to accelerate the rollout of lifesaving vaccines, reduce maternal and child mortality, combat chronic malnutrition, and increase access to assistive technology. We are investing in horizontal approaches to strengthen health systems through programs in human resources for health, digital health, and health financing. With each new and innovative program, our strategy is grounded in maximizing sustainable impact at scale, ensuring that governments lead the solutions, that programs are designed to scale nationally, and learnings are shared globally.

CHAI’s global malaria and neglected tropical disease (NTD) program provides direct technical and operational support to countries around the globe to strengthen their programs and reduce the burden of preventable, treatable diseases. We support governments to scale up effective interventions for prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance, with the goals of sustainably reducing the number of illnesses and deaths worldwide in the short-term and accelerating progress towards elimination of malaria and NTDs in the long term.
Overview of role
CHAI is seeking a highly motivated individual to provide guidance to malaria programs in five African countries that are in the process of developing antimalarial drug resistance plans and strategies. To help inform these plans, CHAI will conduct a baseline assessment in each of the five countries to (i) collate available data and information on the status of artemisinin resistance; (ii) identify and evaluate any gaps in the data, evidence, or surveillance regarding the drivers that may cause the onset or spread of resistance; and (iii) evaluate the need to and feasibility of implementing a variety of interventions to mitigate the threat of resistance. The Associate will lead and oversee the assessment in close collaboration with CHAI’s technical and country teams, government partners and global and regional stakeholders. The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic, diverse and multidisciplinary team and have the opportunity to work directly with national malaria programs and CHAI’s country teams to co-create innovative strategies to mitigate artemisinin resistance, and to shape the global response to this imminent threat.

The candidate must have excellent communications skills and cultural sensitivity, as they will be working closely with regional and country partners. The successful candidate will have strong technical, organizational and project management skills, and will be capable of conducting rapid quantitative/qualitative analysis and communicating such analysis on a regular basis in a clear and concise manner to colleagues and partners.
The main responsibilities of the Associate include (i) conducting project management tasks such as facilitating and leading regular check ins with the five country teams; contributing to workplan, budget and donor reporting reviews, and ensuring project timelines and deliverables are met and (ii) providing technical guidance to CHAI’s country teams on what may be contributing to resistance and what interventions can mitigate or delay the onset of resistance.
Responsibilities
- Review and synthesize of evidence of antimalarial drug resistance across 5 countries
- Assess strengths and weaknesses of national institutions and mechanisms (public and private) that regulate and distribute antimalarial drugs, monitor and promote compliance to treatment guidelines, and implement efficacy studies
- Compile and analyze potential drivers of resistance (based on WHO guidance)
- Define and cost potential ACT diversification scenarios
- Develop interim and final assessment reports/presentations with findings and recommendations
- Support development and implementation of national antimalaria drug resistance strategies
- Support broader malaria case management work across the 5 countries, where appropriate
Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree and at least 3 years of working experience with increasing levels of responsibility and leadership
- High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Experience working in an international context and/or entrepreneurial environment
- Exceptional analytical (qualitative and quantitative) and communication (written, oral, interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving) skills
- Ability to think strategically and anticipate future consequences and trends
- Ability to work well both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Ability to be effective, calm, and flexible in a fast-paced work environment, to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and to effectively prioritize
- Ability to travel up to 50% as needed
- Fluent written and spoken English and French language skills
