The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking an Associate Director to oversee and manage global creative collateral and branding in the department. The Associate Director will ensure that the department’s creative content supports our fundraising efforts, meets our design standards, aligns with organizational branding, and collaborates effectively with other teams in the department.
This full-time position will report to the Managing Director of Marketing in the Development and Outreach Department, based in Washington DC. This position will preferably be based in New York, Washington DC, or London, while other locations with major HRW offices are also considered. We anticipate that the successful candidate will begin this position in December 2021.
Due to COVID-19, many of our global offices are currently closed or operating in reduced capacities. The successful candidate may be required to work remotely initially, or as local mandates require. We recognize that this moment, during the COVID-19 pandemic, is a uniquely difficult time for most people, particularly those with caregiving responsibilities, and we aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee the production of the organization’s Annual Report, including developing concepts and ensuring successful implementation in designing, listing, translating, printing, and mailing;
- In consultation with frontline fundraisers, manage the creation of annual dinner and other fundraising event collateral that reflect their needs, including design templates, save the dates, printed and digital invitation, program, onscreen presentations, opening animations, pledge cards and sponsor forms and centerpieces;
- Supervise the production and distribution of branded merchandise, including vetting and hiring vendors, and creating products based on staff needs within budgetary limitations;
- Review all fundraising events and other branded collaterals made by each team for copyright verification and brand consistency;
- Oversee production of new fundraising tools as requested by frontline fundraisers, including outreach presentation slides and brochures, and other standardized communication templates;
- With feedback from Development and other relevant staff, evaluate regularly the effectiveness of current tools/products and adapt as needed;
- Successfully manage peer relationships of key stakeholders across the Development and other key departments;
- Work with the Managing Director to build strategy and establish clear work plans for staff and communicate priorities clearly and effectively;
- Regularly monitor the budget and ensure that resources are allocated appropriately;
- Supervise and support Creative staff by listening, having two-way communication, sharing pertinent information, responding appropriately and delegating appropriate responsibilities;
- Perform other responsibilities as may be required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education: A bachelor’s degree in graphic design, marketing, communication or related field, or equivalent work experience, is required.
Experience: A minimum of five years of relevant work experience, preferably with experience within a global setting in creative, branding and/or marketing, is required.
Required Skills and Knowledge:
- Outstanding ability to communicate thought, ideas and values verbally and visually is required.
- Proven success in working with global organizations, preferably across multiple cultures and languages, is highly desirable.
- Strong design related technology skills, including experience with Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, are required; knowledge of Salesforce and Marketing Cloud is a plus.
- Excellent oral and written communications skills in English are required; fluency in French, Arabic or other languages is a plus.
- Strong interpersonal skills in order to work collaboratively within the department as well as with staff across HRW is highly desirable.
- Ability to multi-task effectively, including having good planning and organizing skills and ability to work under pressure are required.
- An entrepreneurial spirit and the discipline to work independently, but also the ability to function as a member of a development team is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated commitment to human rights and/or international issues and the capacity to master and represent the mission and programs of HRW is essential.
