Associate Geospatial Information Officer, P-2 At United Nations

The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) provides critical Supply Chain, Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies services and Training to all Secretariat Entities, Peacekeeping and Special Political Missions, Agencies, Funds and Programmes of the UN system worldwide.

This position is located in the Data Visualization Unit (DVU) of the Client Solutions Delivery Section (CSDS) within the Service for Geospatial Information and Telecommunications Technologies (SGITT), UNGSC, Brindisi, Italy.

The incumbent will report to the Chief of Data and Visualization Unit within the CSDS, or designated officer.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Associate Geospatial Information Officer will be responsible for the following:

• Engages in the timely preparation, maintenance, and provision of geospatial information and maps in support of the UN operations; Collects, process, and evaluates geospatial data including vector, raster, thematic, open data and big data; Compiles large-scale operation maps and small-scale briefing/report maps; and Conducts geospatial/terrain analysis studies and prediction of the effects of terrain, weather and situation on the UN operations.

•Assists in performing quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) on all products generated and disseminated by the Client Solutions Delivery Section, including data, visuals, web base & mobile map applications; Assists in providing geospatial information training and education programmes for UN staff; and assists in managing the technical work of junior staff.

• Archives global geospatial data and maintains the hybrid geospatial -database system; Maintains online dynamic web maps, 3D web scenes, web services, and visualization dashboards, including the enterprise geoportal and its associated services. Support cartographic standardization processes.

• Assists in the sharing of geospatial data with UN Field Offices, DOS UNGIS Section, and UNGSC customers, including UN Agencies Funds and Programmes, and Offices Away of HQ (OAH) and assists in the promotion of services and undertake day-to-day geospatial operation matters.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in geospatial information science, cartography, geography, or other disciplines that involve geospatial information related programmes is required. A first-level university degree in combination with an additional two (2) years qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advance university degree.

Job – Specific Qualification

Technical certification in ArcGIS Pro (Associate or Professional) is desirable.

Work Experience

A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible professional experience in the field of geospatial information (e.g. geospatial information applications, geospatial database management, geospatial/terrain analysis, cartography and 2D/3D mapping, and image processing, ) or related fields, or the successful completion of the Young Professionals Programme Examination (YPP)/United Nations National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P) is required.

Experience in the use of geographic information systems (GIS) software ArcMap/ArcGIS Pro is required.

Experience in 2D/3D web mapping, including 3D scenes authoring & publishing workflows using ArcGIS Enterprise, and experience in geodatabase management using Enterprise Geodatabase (ArcSDE) is desirable.

Experience in mapping project management as well as managing technical teams is desirable.

Experience in innovative geo-visualization techniques and hands on 3D digital twin technologies (game engines, AR/VR/MR, photogrammetry) is desirable.

Prior experience in UN peacekeeping field operations, humanitarian operations or similar International related field experience is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is (both oral and written) is required.
