The Global Human Resources Division of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking an Officer to support benefits and leave administration for HRW’s global operations, supporting 500+ employees in over 50 countries around the world. The Officer will ideally be based in New York or Washington, D.C. and reports to the Senior Manager, Global Human Resources based in New York.

Due to COVID-19, many of our global offices are operating in reduced capacities. The successful candidate may be required to work remotely if local mandates necessitate. We recognize that this moment, during the pandemic, is a uniquely difficult time for most people, particularly those with caregiving responsibilities, and we aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position.

Responsibilities:**

  1. Support administration of HRW’s employee benefits plans, including health (medical, dental and vision) insurance plans, life insurance, short- and long-term disability insurance, accidental death & dismemberment insurance, flexible spending accounts, 403(b) contributions, tuition reimbursements and other HRW benefits for staff globally;
  2. Assist with coordination of the annual insurance renewal and Open Enrollment process for the US, international, and local plans in coordination with relevant insurance brokers;
  3. Oversee the leave of absence administration for staff globally, including family leave, and short- and long-term disability leaves, sabbatical, and paid/unpaid leaves;
  4. Assist with onboarding and orientation related to benefits of employees globally;
  5. Respond to staff queries on benefits and assist staff in resolving issues, partnering with US and international benefits brokers;
  6. Liaise with the internal payroll team on monthly payroll activities to ensure accuracy of salary adjustments, pay arrangements, and other staff changes;
  7. Support HRW staff and HR team in generating periodic reports including insurance censuses, staff lists and demographics, and other reports as needed;
  8. Liaise with Operations staff in global offices on a range of HR issues;
  9. Assist with various employee relations and general HR inquiries for the global organization; and
  10. Perform other responsibilities, as required.

Qualifications:**

Education: A bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in human resources, business, law, or a related field.

Experience: A minimum of three years of relevant HR experience in an international setting, particularly in benefits administration, is preferred.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

  1. Strong generalist understanding of HR processes, specifically in benefits and leave administration is required. Working knowledge of US benefit plans, specifically experience managing Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) and Health Reimbursement Accounts (HRAs) is highly desirable.
  2. Proven ability in clearly explaining complex benefits and insurance information to staff of all levels with a varying degree of knowledge of insurance plans is required, including orientations and onboarding of new staff.
  3. Good judgment and analytical skills and the ability to solve problems creatively are required.
  4. Ability to maintain confidentiality is required.
  5. Excellent time-management skills and ability to prioritize tasks while maintaining a strong attention to detail is required.
  6. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with all levels of staff within the organization are required.
  7. Strong computer knowledge including MS Office applications, HR Management Systems (HRMS) is required. Experience using UltiPro (Ultimate Software) is highly desirable.
  8. Ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks simultaneously is required.
  9. Commitment to and experience working with staff, vendors, and partners in a positive, collaborative, diverse, and inclusive team environment is required.
  10. Demonstrated awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and orientations are required.
  11. Prior experience in a global non-profit environment is highly desirable.
