Body Repair / Welder at CTG

Overview of position:

  • To service, maintain & repair all types of light / heavy vehicles, trailers & plant equipment in a safe, efficient & economical manner, deploying requisite skills & expertise.
  • Working to the highest standards with / without close supervision to achieve an acceptable level of work throughout whist maintaining quality standards at all times in accordance with the established procedures, normative guidelines as set in the logistics fleet manual.

Role objectives:

  • Remove damaged panels & components by unbolting or cutting them away.
  • Remove dents by hammering panels with panel beating tools such as a special hammer called a planishing hammer.
  • Straighten badly damaged vehicles using mechanical & hydraulic equipment to obtain door, boot & bonnet clearances.
  • Cut & join replacement sections or damaged panels using oxyacetylene & electric welding equipment.
  • Fill dents with plastic fillers, file, grind & sand repaired surfaces using power & hand tools.
  • Fit the repaired panel on the framework of the vehicle & refit body hardware such as door locks & door trims.
  • Replace badly damaged sections with new or second hand panels.
  • Realign chassis, body frames & use chassis alignment machines & measuring systems.
  • Remove & replace accident related mechanical items.
  • Remove & replace auto electric components.
  • Assist in spray painting vehicles.
  • Weld & fabricate items as required.
  • Supervise & instruct semiskilled staff, apprentices & other junior staff in the workshop, including also the requirement to attend any training courses on vehicles or equipment that may be deemed necessary.
  • Use safe working practises & procedures at all times & in particular to comply with the organisations health & safety at work policy, including the wearing of protective clothing, masks & consideration for the environment.
  • Share experiences gained with other staff members & strive towards creating good team building & harmonious atmosphere.
  • Loss or damage of cargo, spares, tools or equipment as well as loss of fuel in the care of the employee shall be deducted from the salary based on CIF value or local market rate, whichever is prevailing. This can also lead to penalties or dismissal to the personnel & penalties on the service provider or contractor.
  • Travel occasionally, as required by the organisation & perform any other duties as requested by immediate supervisor.
  • Expected output at the end of contract:
  • Repair all vehicles to the highest standard in the shortest possible timeframe & with the utmost importance to withhold the highest safety standards.

Project reporting:

  • This role reports to the Worshop Manager & the Foreman.

Key competencies:

  • Minimum of 3 years of demonstrable relevant maintenance experience.
  • Certificate in body repairs / panel beating, completed a full course at technical college, or similar institution in body repairs / panel beating, welding with experience gained in both light & heavy vehicles.
  • French is essential. Fluency in English is desirable.
  • Held the position of body repairer (panel beater) or welder or similar job in a company / NGO with at least 3 years’ experience gained in the relevant field.
  • Hold a full driving licence for light vehicle category, able to drive forklift when required.

Team management:

  • The incumbent will liaise & cooperate with other mechanics, workshop staff & stores personnel & will have the following reporting to the incumbent directly.
