Hivos is seeking a seasoned Business Development Manager to join its Business Development team. In this role, the manager will use expert communication skills and a keen sense of initiative to spot fundraising opportunities, develop relationships with potential donors, and manage different outreach activities (presentation, events). By coordinating events, writing proposals, the fundraiser will hone speaking, writing, and leadership abilities while moving Hivos closer to its financial goals.

The ideal candidate will be motivated, professional, and organized and have a knack for research/donor intelligence. We’re looking for someone who believes in the mission of Hivos and has exceptional drive for furthering our fundraising efforts as well as strategizing and delivering on new ones.

Role purpose

The purpose of the role is to:

  • Promote awareness of the organization’s mission and work, especially in the field of Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.
  • Cultivate a network of dedicated donors and volunteers.
  • Spot new fundraising opportunities.
  • Plan fundraising initiatives to meet financial goals.
  • Form strong relationships with external stakeholders.
  • Ensure major donors, both foundations and government donors are satisfied and kept in the loop.

Key responsibilities

  • Effectively convey Hivos’ mission, vision, and programs to potential donors.
  • Coordinate and lead Hivos’ proactive outreach towards donors focusing on the African continent.
  • Significant contributing to the financial target of Hivos.
  • Leading and guiding proposal/consortia teams.
  • Write and reviewing proposals.
  • Organize fundraising events in collaboration with program and communication colleagues

Person specifications

  • Master’s degree in communications, business, public relations, or related field.
  • A minimum of 6 years of relevant experience in Business Development, sales and marketing knowledge.
  • Technical knowledge and skills in Business Development processes and procedures, both internal and external with donors.
  • Proven track record in writing successful grant proposals, press releases, and fundraising letters.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills in English including to facilitate/lead proposal development workshops, and write strong concept notes and proposals.
  • Exceptional relationship-building skills
  • Pro-active attitude both internal and external towards (new) donors
  • Ability to lead and motivate colleagues and external stakeholders
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Passion for research/donor intelligence
  • Ability to successfully balance priorities while managing multiple tasks and planning events
  • Competence with donor management systems
  • Confidence in public speaking

Hivos offers a challenging position in an international environment.

The Regional Office is based in Harare, Zimbabwe. This position will be based in Harare, Zimbabwe or Lusaka, Zambia. Hivos welcomes international & regional applicants but can only offer a position to only those with a valid work permit for Zimbabwe or Zambia.
