Business Development Manager, US Growth At Global Communities

The Business Development Manager (BDM) is responsible for supporting the domestic arm of Global Communities by identifying new business opportunities, building, and nurturing donor relationships, leading and writing compelling proposals, and supporting the team on relevant US growth strategies.

Responsibilities

In coordination with the Managing Director of US Growth, develop and execute actionable, evidence-based resource mobilization plans with time bound deliverables and targets. Find new funding sources including setting internal goals for private, public, and corporate support. Work with Managing Director on a plan together with the BD team and the private engagement team to ensure there is no overlap.

  • Provide evidence-based resource development for US Growth through analyzing past performance and corresponding with key staff to inform decision-making on setting future donor targets and resource development strategies. This will include use of Salesforce. Research new and existing funders to support our US portfolio and review our internal CRM system (Salesforce) to determine if they are worth pursuing given their past giving amounts, core initiatives, and relationships with GC.
  • Once grants are received, the BD Manager will prepare and submit reports in partnership with the US programs team as a contributor and reviewer.
  • Provide timely and accurate pipeline reporting for technical US teams in formats with data that supports good decision making and collaboration with principal technical and regional stakeholders.
  • Facilitates and enables close coordination with both the Business Development and Private Engagement teams in the prioritization of the solicitation pipeline. The BD manager will ensure we are not reaching out to funders that are already working with other teams and work in close coordination to divide the opportunities available for our domestic programs.
  • Ensures that the Salesforce opportunity records are maintained and accurate.
  • Provides guidance and support to key staff for proactive positioning for new business development success, including clearly communicating the ROI on new opportunities. bring new funding opportunities to the table, and clearly communicating the ROI on these opportunities to the US programs team, private engagement team, and BD team.

Responsibility Area: Managing Opportunity Workstreams, and Opportunity Development

Coordinates the business and proposal activities and resources for specific opportunities with the Strategic Growth & Partnerships (SGP) Department Directors and Managers on business priorities, technical inputs reflecting product lines, and the sharing of resources across the department as needed and according to agreed-upon priorities. Also responsible for working with the team on proposal writing, costing, contracting, editing, production, and submission for designated business and proposal activities. Bring new opportunities to the table and works with the team on completing the Opportunity Assessment (OA) form to determine if the opportunity is worth pursuing. If approved, helps manage the proposal from start to finish by coordinating with the technical team and the BD team.

  • Directs the activities for designated business pursuits beginning with positioning and capturing through proposal preparations and submissions. Oversees and participates in development of all materials essential for successful positioning, capture, partnering, kick-off (e.g., solicitation analysis, calendar) and proposal submission.
  • In support of the technical leads and/or country programs, facilitates the translation of program designs into winning proposals, including driving competitive analysis and development of win themes.
  • Provides writing and/or editing support for proposals, including development of technical narrative sections and multiple attachments.
  • Manages issues of document version control and sequencing of reviews, ensuring quality and timely submission.
  • Effectively presents programmatic information to donors in the form of letters of interest (LOIs), concept notes, capacity statements, past performance information, and other materials.
  • Requests feedback on proposal submissions, facilitates debriefs for proposal teams, and works to apply lessons learned to continuously improve the quality of future submissions.

Responsibility Area: Relationship Cultivation and Donor/Partnership Stewardship

  • In partnership with the Managing Director of US Growth and the Private Engagement team, supports in representing Global Communities to public donors, partners, and other external audiences as required in support of resource mobilization targets.
  • Assists with technical branding efforts linked to programming distinctives and donor funding priorities.
  • Assists with the development and maintenance of high impact marketing materials such as capacity statements, brochures, web content, etc.
  • Leads/facilitates donor identification, targeting, relationship cultivation and stewardship in coordination SGP staff, technical staff and other departments and units in support of securing direct program resources for the organization. This includes working with the Managing Director of US Growth on researching new leads, meeting with donors, working with the team to complete new proposals, and setting target goals.
  • Network with new business development professionals in peer organizations to build potential partnerships and enhance organizational learning.
  • Maintains, completes, and submits donor reports with support of US programs team.

Responsibility Area: Knowledge Management, Information Sharing and Capacity Strengthening

Given the differences in international and domestic funding from the public perspective, undertakes efforts to improve the quality of proposals, the efficiency of the proposal development process, and the effective transition from proposal award to field implementation through mentoring, coaching, and preparation of tools and processes, and capacity building activities for the Global Communities family; may serve as a reviewer for high-priority proposals as assigned. review existing processes and determine if any changes need to be made.

Domestic public grant writing experience that can be shared with our BD and private engagement team.

  • Contribute to Global Communities’ robust client management/Salesforce data base through routine inputs, capacity building of staff, and application of data towards development activities and targets.
  • In collaboration with SGP leadership, helps design and implement new business development training to increase new business development skills and knowledge across the US and field teams.
  • Enhances competitiveness and organizational growth through inputs and implementation of Global Communities’ processes, procedures, policies, and best practices for proposal preparations, reviews, and capacity building.
  • Promotes a culture of excellence, inclusion, learning, support, diversity, and innovation.
  • In partnership with the Managing Director of US Growth, coordinates with key departments and units across Global Communities, particularly Communications, to market organizational program achievements and technical capacities

  • Perform additional tasks as assigned.

POSITION SPECIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Must be available for occasional travel within California and the US.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in a related discipline with 4 years of related work experience or a minimum of eight years of related work experience.
  • Technical expertise in public health, climate, environment, and systems change a plus.
  • A passion for the mission and values of Global Communities
  • Experience with submitting US local, state, and federal grants.
  • Proven track record of identifying, tracking, and leading winning awards from bilateral, multi-lateral and private sector clients.
  • Strong analytical skills, including ability to gather and analyze a variety of information pertaining to issues and to develop appropriate recommendations for action.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including ability to lead and manage proposal development teams and oversee the contributions of others.
  • Experience in capacity building of development and programmatic staff in business processes and applications, and experience in organizing and facilitating such training.
  • Ability to work effectively in an atmosphere of multiple projects, shifting priorities, and deadline pressure.
  • Ability to communicate, negotiate, advise, persuade, or resolve complex and sensitive issues with internal / external stakeholders at all levels and cultural backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions that require substantial interpretation of established policies and procedures, clear objectives, and business/professional standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with donors, project stakeholders, in-country collaborators, and staff at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong written communication skills, including demonstrated ability to write required documents in a clear, concise, well-organized manner.
  • Experience working in San Diego County and community settings (community outreach, family/public support services, Advocacy and/or related services)
  • Access to a quiet and private workspace when working remotely.
  • Fluent in English (read, write, speak) is required, second languages are a plus.
  • Proficiency in computers and use of MS Word and Excel required.
  • Must be available for occasional travel within California and US.
