Title: Egypt Local Researcher

Location: Egypt, nationwide

Duration: Approximately 3-6 days per month, from September 2021 until June 2022

Salary: Approximately 100 euros per briefing (to be established with the consultant)

Purpose of the job

The purpose of the job is to help ensure the monitoring and documentation of violations and abuses against minority groups and individuals in Egypt.

Main duties and responsibilities

The main responsibility of the post holder is to observe the situation of religious and ethnic minorities in Egypt including but not limited to: Ahmedis, Amazighs, Atheists, Bahai’s, Beja, Christians of various denomintaions, Jews, Nubians, Qurani’s, Shia, Sinai Bedouins.

  1. In their assigned area of work, the post holder will monitor discrimination and other human rights abuses affecting religious and ethnic minorities in their area.
  2. S/he is expected to travel to the area of concern to gather up-to-date information, document the violations, and interview various stakeholders as the situation allows.
  3. The researcher should report their findings and analysis in a written briefing. The briefing should follow a methodological approach..

Person specification

Education and Knowledge

Essential

  • A university degree in a relevant field (political science, law, social sciences, communication…etc)
  • Good knowledge of the field of human rights, with particular emphasis on Egypt
  • Good Knowledge of the current social and political context in Egypt, including the situation and needs of minority communities in the country

Desirable

  • Knowledge of international human rights law and minority rights law

Experience

Essential

  • Proven record in documentation and reporting on violations and abuses of human rights

Desirable

  • Experience on reporting on minority groups in Egypt

Abilities and skills

Essential

  • Excellent written and spoken Arabic
  • Proven ability to prioritise work and meet deadlines
  • Proven ability to work as a team but also use own initiative
  • Proven ability to stay calm under pressure and to assess and absorb information quickly
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to gain the confidence of members of minority communities
  • Ability and willingness to travel as required
